About the Canadian GPA System
4.0 Scale
Most Canadian universities use a 4.0 GPA scale where A+ and A both equal 4.0, A− equals 3.7, and so on down to F = 0. Alberta universities use the province-wide "Common Alpha/4.0" scale.
Standard Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours). This weighted average is used across all Canadian universities, though the letter-grade-to-grade-point mapping varies slightly between institutions.
Percentage Conversion
The standard 4.0-scale conversion is Percentage = GPA × 25, equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. Most Canadian universities don't show percentages on transcripts — use this approximation only when an external institution requests it.
Distinction Thresholds
Most Canadian universities award Graduation with Distinction for a GPA of 3.5 or higher (truncated to two decimals). Higher tiers like "Great Distinction" or "Summa Cum Laude" typically require 3.7+ — check your specific university's policy.
Canadian GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Canadian university show a different GPA scale?
Most Canadian universities use a 4.0 scale, but some institutions (e.g., Queen's University, University of Waterloo, McGill) use a 9-point or 12-point scale or report cumulative averages as percentages instead.
For consistency, this directory focuses on universities that use the standard 4.0 scale. We're working on adding 9-point and percentage-based universities as separate calculators.
How do I convert my Canadian GPA to a percentage?
On the 4.0 scale, the standard conversion is Percentage = GPA × 25. Examples: GPA 3.5 → 87.5%, GPA 3.0 → 75%, GPA 2.0 → 50%.
However, Canadian universities don't usually print percentages on transcripts. Use the per-university calculators above for the exact formula recommended by each institution.
What's a "good" GPA in Canada?
On a 4.0 scale:
- 3.7+ (A−/A) — Excellent. Competitive for graduate school, scholarships, and top employers.
- 3.0–3.69 (B to A−) — Good. Eligible for most graduate programmes and professional schools.
- 2.0–2.99 (C to B−) — Satisfactory. Meets graduation requirements at most universities.
- Below 2.0 — Academic review possible at most institutions.
Different programmes (e.g., medical school, law school) have their own GPA cut-offs that may be much higher than the university minimum.
Are these calculators official?
No — CGPAPro is an independent third-party tool and not affiliated with any university. Each calculator uses the grading scale and conversion formula published in the respective university's official policy documents (linked in the References section on each page).
For your official transcript or conversion certificate, always contact the Office of the Registrar at your university.
Can I request my university to be added?
Yes! Use our contact form and tell us which Canadian university you'd like added. Include a link to the official grading policy if possible — that helps us build an accurate calculator faster.
