About

Simon Fraser University & the 4.33 Grading System

Simon Fraser University (SFU) — a leading public research university in British Columbia, with campuses in Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver — uses a 4.33 standard grading scale. Unlike most 4.0-scale systems, an A+ is worth 4.33 grade points (above the A at 4.00), rewarding exceptional work and raising the maximum achievable GPA.

Tool 1

Simon Fraser University GPA Calculator

Add each course with its SFU letter grade and unit value. Works for SFU term GPA and cumulative GPA (CGPA) using the standard 4.33 grading scale.

Add Your Courses

Uses SFU's standard 4.33 scale: A+, A, A−, B+, B, B−, C+, C, C−, D, F.

How to use the CGPA Calculator

  1. Enter your semester name or number (e.g. Semester 1, 1st, First).
  2. Enter the SGPA for that semester.
  3. Enter the total credits earned in that semester.
  4. Click “Add Semester”, then repeat for every completed semester.
  5. Click “Calculate CGPA” to see your cumulative result.

Although CGPA is normally awarded at the end of the programme, you can use this tool any time to see your current or running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed so far.

The Math

Simon Fraser University GPA Formula

Per the official SFU Undergraduate Grading Systems and Policies.

SFU GPA
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Numerical Equivalent} \times \text{Units})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Units}} \]
Numerical EquivalentGrade-point value 0–4.33 for each letter grade
UnitsUnit (credit) value assigned to each course

📝 Worked Example (SFU's official illustration)

This is the exact example published in the SFU Academic Calendar, showing how a term GPA is computed:

CourseLetter GradeNumeric ValueUnitsGrade Point
Course 1A4.0034.00 × 3 = 12.00
Course 2A+4.3334.33 × 3 = 12.99
Course 3B−2.6732.67 × 3 = 8.01
Course 4C2.0032.00 × 3 = 6.00
Course 5F0.0040.00 × 4 = 0.00
Total1639.00

Plugging into the formula (rounded to two decimal places):

\[ \text{Term GPA} = \frac{39.00}{16} = \mathbf{2.44} \]

The percentage equivalent on the 4.33 scale:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \frac{2.44}{4.33} \times 100 \approx \mathbf{56.35\%} \]

Note: the percentage figure is an unofficial, scale-aligned approximation — SFU itself reports only the GPA, not a percentage.

Tool 2

SFU GPA to Percentage

Scale-aligned conversion for the 4.33 system: Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.33) × 100.

SFU Percentage Converter

Enter any GPA between 0 and 4.33.

Note: SFU does not publish an official GPA-to-percentage conversion — transcripts show grade points on the 4.33 scale, not percentages. (GPA ÷ 4.33) × 100 is a scale-aligned approximation. Some bodies instead approximate the US 4.0 equivalent as GPA × 0.924. Always check which method your target institution requires.

A4.00Excellent performance
A−3.67Excellent performance
B+3.33Good performance
B3.00Good performance
B−2.67Good performance

Note: Credit is earned when a course is passed with a grade of D or above. A grade of N is treated as an F for scholastic standing. FD remains on the transcript until two years after graduation, when it converts to F.

🎓 SFU GPA Thresholds

Key term-GPA (TGPA) and cumulative-GPA (CGPA) benchmarks for SFU students

GPAThreshold
≥ 4.00President's Honour Roll (TGPA) · First class with distinction at graduation (CGPA & UDGPA)
≥ 3.50Dean's Honour Roll (TGPA) · graduation with distinction (CGPA & UDGPA)
≥ 3.00Minimum graduation GPA for honours programs
≥ 2.00Good academic standing · minimum graduation GPA for a major, extended minor or minor
< 2.00Academic probation after an attempt of 9 units at SFU

Note: Honour Roll designations also require a minimum of 30 completed SFU units, at least 12 GPA-counted units in the term, and no FD grade. Individual faculties and departments may set higher requirements with senate approval. Verify with the SFU Office of the Registrar.

Got Questions?

Simon Fraser University GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Simon Fraser University grading scale?

SFU uses a 4.33 standard grading scale. Each letter grade has a numerical equivalent:

A+ = 4.33 · A = 4.00 · A− = 3.67 (excellent) · B+ = 3.33 · B = 3.00 · B− = 2.67 (good) · C+ = 2.33 · C = 2.00 (satisfactory) · C− = 1.67 · D = 1.00 (marginal) · F = 0.00 (fail).

Note that an A+ (4.33) is worth more than an A (4.00) — this is the key feature of SFU's scale. Credit is earned with a grade of D or above.

How does SFU calculate term GPA and CGPA?

Each grade's numerical equivalent is multiplied by the course's unit value to produce the grade point. The term GPA equals total grade points earned ÷ total units completed in the term, to two decimal places.

The cumulative GPA (CGPA) divides total grade points earned to date by total units undertaken to date. The upper division GPA (UDGPA) uses only upper division courses. Grades without a numerical equivalent (P, W, CR, AU, etc.) are excluded.

Does SFU have an official GPA-to-percentage conversion?

No. SFU does not publish an official GPA-to-percentage formula — transcripts report letter grades and grade points on the 4.33 scale, not percentages.

When an external institution requires a percentage, a common scale-aligned approximation is (GPA ÷ 4.33) × 100. For a rough US 4.0-scale equivalent, some bodies multiply the SFU GPA by 0.924. Always confirm the required method with the institution requesting the percentage.

What CGPA do I need for good academic standing?

Students are expected to maintain a minimum 2.00 CGPA. A student who has attempted at least nine units with a CGPA below 2.00 is placed on academic probation and may not enroll in a course overload.

The required standing for continuation is calculated after an attempt of nine units at SFU. Continued performance below 2.00 in both term GPA and CGPA may lead to being required to withdraw (RTW).

What's the difference between the Dean's and President's Honour Roll?

The Dean's Honour Roll requires a minimum term GPA (TGPA) of 3.50; the President's Honour Roll requires a minimum TGPA of 4.00.

Both also require a minimum of 30 completed units at SFU, at least 12 GPA-counted units in the term being evaluated, and no FD grade in that term. Admission is automatic for any student meeting all criteria — no application needed.

What GPA do I need to graduate with distinction?

Students graduating with a first undergraduate degree who achieve 3.50 or greater in both the CGPA and the upper division GPA (UDGPA) receive the designation with distinction.

Achieving 4.00 or greater on both earns first class with distinction. The minimum graduation GPA is 3.00 for honours and 2.00 for a major, extended minor or minor — both on overall course work and the upper division subset.

What do FD and N grades mean at SFU?

FD (fail, academic discipline) is assigned by the department chair when a student has committed academic dishonesty. It carries 0.00 and stays on the transcript until two years after graduation, when it converts to F.

N (incomplete) is given when a student enrolled but did not write the final exam or complete the course and did not withdraw in time. N carries 0.00 and is treated as an F for scholastic standing; the course normally must be repeated for credit.
