Athabasca University GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Athabasca University grading scale?
Athabasca University uses Alberta's Common Alpha/4.0 grading scale (effective Jan 1, 2003):
A+ / A = 4.0 (Excellent) · A− = 3.7 · B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B− = 2.7 · C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0 · C− = 1.7 · D+ = 1.3 · D = 1.0 · F = 0.
Minimum passing grade is D (1.0) unless otherwise stipulated in the course outline.
How is Athabasca University GPA converted to percentage?
The standard 4.0-scale conversion is: Percentage = GPA × 25, equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100.
Examples: GPA 3.3 → 82.5% | GPA 3.0 → 75% | GPA 2.0 → 50%.
Athabasca does not officially endorse a single GPA-to-percentage formula. For official transcripts, AU shows both the letter grade and the corresponding 4-point grade value — not a percentage. Use × 25 as the common approximation when an institution asks for a percentage equivalent.
What GPA is needed to graduate with Distinction?
Per AU regulations, Graduation with Distinction requires a minimum graduation GPA of 3.5 (truncated to two decimal points), with both the included GPA and the program GPA meeting the threshold.
Graduation with Great Distinction typically requires a higher threshold (e.g., 3.7+). The general minimum GPA for continuation in most AU undergraduate programmes is 2.0.
What do AD, WF, U, and P grades mean?
AD (Audit): Course audited — appears on transcript but not in GPA.
WF (Withdrawal Failure): Awarded when a student is unsuccessful and does not formally withdraw — not included in cumulative GPA.
U (Failure): Failure in a pass/fail course — not in GPA.
P (Pass): Pass in a pass/fail course — not in GPA.
W (Withdrawal): Course officially withdrawn — not in GPA.
Does this calculator work for AU graduate programmes?
This calculator uses the undergraduate Alpha/4.0 scale. The GPA formula Σ(GP × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits) is the same for AU graduate programmes (Masters, Doctorate).
However, at the graduate level, the minimum passing grade is typically C− (and some programmes require B or higher for credit). Failing grades for graduate courses are any grade below the programme's minimum passing grade. Verify with your specific graduate programme's grading policy.
Are courses taken before 2003 calculated differently?
Yes. For courses with start dates before January 1, 2003, Athabasca University used the percentage grading scale. These older percentage grades are converted to the 4.0 scale before GPA is calculated.
For courses with start dates of January 1, 2003 or later, only the alpha grade is retained on the official transcript. The transcript shows both the letter grade and its corresponding 4-point grade value for each course.
What's the passing grade at Athabasca University?
For undergraduate courses started January 1, 2003 or later, the passing grade is D (1.0) unless otherwise stipulated in the course outline.
For courses taken between September 1989 and December 31, 2002, the passing grade was 50%. For courses started before September 1989, the passing grade was 60%.
At the graduate level, the minimum passing grade is typically C−, with some programmes requiring higher.
