Background

CGPA Systems in Indian Universities

India's CGPA landscape is diverse — different universities use different scales and conversion formulas.

10-Point Scale Dominates

Most Indian universities — including JNTUH, VTU, RTU, RGPV, AKTU, Anna University — use a 10-point CGPA scale, where 10 is the highest grade point.

Different % Formulas

Each university has its own formula: JNTUH uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, RGPV / Anna use CGPA × 10.

Letter-Grade Variations

The letter system varies too — VTU uses S → F, JNTUH uses O → F, RTU uses a 12-grade A++ → F scale. Each university page shows the exact mapping.

Verified Against Sources

Every calculator on CGPAPro is built using the official academic-regulation PDFs published by each university. We cite the source on every page.

Running CGPA Supported

Calculate your CGPA anytime — not just at the end of the programme. Add only the semesters you've completed to see your current running CGPA.

Backlogs & F Grades

F grades count as 0 grade points until cleared. Credits remain in the denominator until you clear the backlog by reappearing for the supplementary exam.

FAQ — Indian University CGPA

What is CGPA in Indian universities?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of grade points earned across all completed semesters. Each course is weighted by its credits.

Most Indian universities use a 10-point scale, where 10 is the highest grade point.

How is CGPA converted to percentage in India?

There's no single universal formula — different universities use different ones:

  • UGC / Most Indian universities: Percentage = CGPA × 10
  • CBSE Class 10: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
  • JNTUH: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10
  • VTU: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
  • Mumbai University (Engineering): Percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11

Always use your specific university's formula. Each page on CGPAPro auto-applies the correct one.

Do all Indian universities use the same grading scale?

No. The 10-point scale is most common, but the letter-to-point mapping varies:

  • JNTUH: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, F = 0
  • VTU: S = 10, A = 9, B = 8, C = 7, D = 6, E = 4, F = 0
  • RGPV: A+ = 10, A = 9, B+ = 8, B = 7, C+ = 6, C = 5, D = 4, F = 0
  • RTU: 12-grade CBCS scale from A++ (10) to F (0)
