The Math

VTU CGPA Formula

Per the official Visvesvaraya Technological University academic regulations.

VTU CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{m} (C_i \times S_i)}{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{m} C_i} \]
CiCredits of the i-th semester
SiSGPA earned in the i-th semester
mNumber of completed semesters

📝 Worked Example

A B.E. student has completed all 8 semesters with the following performance:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
1st9.1239.1 × 23 = 209.3
2nd7.5267.5 × 26 = 195.0
3rd8.6248.6 × 24 = 206.4
4th6.9256.9 × 25 = 172.5
5th8.1238.1 × 23 = 186.3
6th7.3247.3 × 24 = 175.2
7th8.8268.8 × 26 = 228.8
8th9.6269.6 × 26 = 249.6
Total1971,623.1

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1623.1}{197} \approx \mathbf{8.24} \]

And the percentage equivalent (using the VTU formula below):

\[ \text{Percentage} = (8.24 - 0.75) \times 10 = \mathbf{74.9\%} \]

Got Questions?

VTU CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VTU grading scale?

VTU uses a 10-point credit-based grading system:

S = 10 (Outstanding, ≥ 90%) · A = 9 (Excellent, 80–89%) · B = 8 (Very Good, 70–79%) · C = 7 (Good, 60–69%) · D = 6 (Average, 45–59%) · E = 4 (Pass, 40–44%) · F = 0 (Fail, < 40%).

Minimum grade to pass any course is E.

How is VTU CGPA converted to percentage?

VTU's official formula is: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

Examples: CGPA 8.0 → 72.5%  |  CGPA 8.5 → 77.5%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 82.5%.

This formula was officially published on the VTU website and applies to the 2015, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022 schemes.

What CGPA is needed for First Class with Distinction at VTU?

First Class with Distinction: Percentage ≥ 70% (CGPA ≥ 7.75).

First Class: ≥ 60% (CGPA ≥ 6.75). Second Class: ≥ 50% (CGPA ≥ 5.75). Pass: ≥ 40% (CGPA ≥ 4.75).

Can I calculate my VTU CGPA before completing all 8 semesters?

Yes. You can compute a running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed so far. Just enter the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester.

Do VTU lateral-entry / diploma students calculate CGPA from semester 3?

Yes. Lateral entry / diploma students at VTU skip the first two semesters and begin from semester 3. Their CGPA is calculated using only semesters 3 to 8.

How are VTU backlogs counted in CGPA?

An F grade carries grade point 0 but the credits of the failed subject are still counted, lowering CGPA. Once you clear the backlog in a supplementary exam, the new grade replaces the F and CGPA is recomputed.

Does this calculator work for VTU B.E., M.Tech, MBA & MCA?

Yes. VTU applies the same 10-point grading scale and the same (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 conversion formula across all programmes — B.E., B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA and other PG programmes.
