The Math

RGPV CGPA Formula

Per the official RGPV ordinance for the four-year Bachelor of Engineering and the Five-Year Dual Degree Programme in Applied Management.

RGPV CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{m} SG_j \times NC_j}{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{m} NC_j} \]
SGjSGPA earned in the j-th semester
NCjTotal credits offered in the j-th semester
mNumber of semesters in the programme

📝 Worked Example

A B.E. student has completed all 8 semesters with the following semester-wise performance:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
1st7.9247.9 × 24 = 189.6
2nd8.8258.8 × 25 = 220.0
3rd9.1269.1 × 26 = 236.6
4th7.8257.8 × 25 = 195.0
5th6.9256.9 × 25 = 172.5
6th7.7257.7 × 25 = 192.5
7th7.0257.0 × 25 = 175.0
8th8.0248.0 × 24 = 192.0
Total1991,573.2

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1573.2}{199} \approx \mathbf{7.91} \]

And the percentage equivalent (using the RGPV formula below):

\[ \text{Percentage} = 7.91 \times 10 = \mathbf{79.1\%} \]
Tool 2

RGPV SGPA Calculator

Add each subject with its RGPV letter grade and credits to compute your semester GPA.

Add Your Subjects

Uses RGPV's official letter grades: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D, F.

How to use the SGPA Calculator

  1. Enter the course or subject name (for example, Mathematics).
  2. Select the grade you received from the dropdown.
  3. Enter the credits assigned to that course.
  4. Click “Add Subject” to add it to the table.
  5. Repeat for every subject, then click “Calculate SGPA”.
SGPA Formula

RGPV SGPA Formula

RGPV SGPA
\[ \text{SGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{n} C_i \times P_i}{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{n} C_i} \]
CiCredits of the i-th course
PiGrade point of the i-th course
nTotal subjects in the semester
Tool 3

Got Questions?

RGPV CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RGPV grading scale?

RGPV uses a 10-point credit-based grading system:

A+ = 10 (Outstanding) · A = 9 (Excellent) · B+ = 8 (Very Good) · B = 7 (Good) · C+ = 6 (Average) · C = 5 (Satisfactory) · D = 4 (Marginal pass) · F = 0 (Fail).

The minimum grade required to pass a course is D.

How is RGPV CGPA converted to percentage?

The official RGPV formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 10.

Examples: CGPA 7.5 → 75%  |  CGPA 8.0 → 80%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 90%.

For an official certificate of percentage equivalence, students can apply through the RGPV Examination Section with the prescribed fee.

What CGPA is needed for First Division at RGPV?

First Division with Honours: CGPA ≥ 7.5 (≥ 75%).

First Division: CGPA ≥ 6.5 (≥ 65%). Second Division: CGPA ≥ 5.0 (≥ 50%).

The minimum CGPA required for the award of degree is 5.0.

Can I calculate my CGPA before completing all semesters?

Yes. You can compute a running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed. Just enter the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester. CGPA is officially calculated from the second semester onwards.

How are RGPV backlogs counted in CGPA?

Failed subjects (F = 0 grade points) are still counted in the credits denominator, lowering your CGPA. Once you clear the backlog by reappearing for the supplementary exam, the new grade replaces the F and CGPA is recomputed.

Does this calculator work for B.E., M.Tech, MBA & MCA?

Yes. RGPV applies the same 10-point grading scale and the same Percentage = CGPA × 10 formula across all programmes — B.E., B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA, B.Pharm and Diploma.

What's the difference between SGPA and CGPA at RGPV?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester from your subject grades and credits.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all SGPAs earned across all completed semesters, weighted by each semester's total credits.
