AKTU CGPA Formula

Per the official AKTU B.Tech Ordinance effective from session 2018-19 onwards.

AKTU CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{m} (C_i \times S_i)}{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{m} C_i} \]
CiCredits of the i-th semester
SiSGPA earned in the i-th semester
mTotal semesters considered

📝 Worked Example

A B.Tech student has completed all 8 semesters with the following semester-wise performance:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
1st8.016.58.0 × 16.5 = 132.0
2nd6.919.06.9 × 19.0 = 131.1
3rd8.323.08.3 × 23.0 = 190.9
4th7.924.07.9 × 24.0 = 189.6
5th8.920.08.9 × 20.0 = 178.0
6th6.821.06.8 × 21.0 = 142.8
7th9.627.09.6 × 27.0 = 259.2
8th7.724.07.7 × 24.0 = 184.8
Total174.51,408.4

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1408.4}{174.5} \approx \mathbf{8.07} \]

And the percentage equivalent (using the official AKTU formula):

\[ \text{Percentage} = (8.07 \times 10) - 7.5 = \mathbf{72.7\%} \]

Got Questions?

AKTU CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AKTU grading scale?

AKTU uses a 10-point credit-based grading system under its 2018-19 / 2019-20 ordinance:

O = 10 (Outstanding, 90–100%) · A+ = 9 (Excellent, 80–89%) · A = 8 (Very Good, 70–79%) · B+ = 7 (Good, 60–69%) · B = 6 (Above Average, 50–59%) · C = 5 (Average, 45–49%) · P = 4 (Pass, 40–44%) · F = 0 (Fail, < 40%).

Minimum grade to pass a course is P.

How is AKTU CGPA converted to percentage?

As per AKTU Letter No. AKTU/RO/2019/1421, the official formula effective from session 2019-20 is:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5

This is mathematically equivalent to (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. The 0.75 (or 7.5) is a normalisation factor used to align AKTU's grading with traditional percentage benchmarks.

Examples: CGPA 8.0 → 72.5%  |  CGPA 8.5 → 77.5%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 82.5%.

What CGPA is needed for First Division at AKTU?

First Division with Distinction / Honours: CGPA ≥ 7.5 with all subjects cleared in the first attempt.

First Division: Percentage ≥ 60% (CGPA ≥ 6.75). Second Division: Percentage ≥ 50% (CGPA ≥ 5.75).

The minimum CGPA to graduate is approximately 4.75.

What is YGPA at AKTU?

YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of the two semester SGPAs in an academic year:

YGPA = (SGPA1 × C1 + SGPA2 × C2) ÷ (C1 + C2)

It represents your performance for a full academic year and is reported on AKTU result transcripts.

Can I calculate my CGPA mid-programme?

Yes. You can compute a running CGPA using only the semesters you've completed. Add the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester to get your cumulative CGPA up to that point.

How are AKTU backlogs counted in CGPA?

An F grade carries 0 grade points but the credits remain in the CGPA denominator, lowering your CGPA. Students must reappear in the carry-over examination.

Once cleared, the new grade replaces the F and CGPA is recomputed. AKTU also allows up to 10 grace marks per year to help pass a theory subject.

Does this calculator work for AKTU B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA and B.Pharm?

Yes. AKTU applies the same 10-point grading scale and the same SGPA/CGPA formulas across all programmes — B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA, B.Pharm, B.Arch and BHMCT.

The CGPA-to-percentage formula (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 also applies to all these programmes.

Is AKTU the same as UPTU?

Yes. AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) is the renamed version of UPTU (Uttar Pradesh Technical University). The university was officially renamed in 2015 in honour of the late President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The grading system, formulas and regulations remain consistent. If your degree says UPTU, you can use this calculator without any change.
