The Math

Anna University GPA / CGPA Formula

Per Anna University Regulation 2021. The same formula applies to both semester GPA and cumulative CGPA.

AU GPA / CGPA
\[ \text{GPA / CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{n} (C_i \times GP_i)}{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{n} C_i} \]
CiCredits of the i-th course of a semester
GPiGrade points obtained in the i-th course
nNumber of courses in the semester (GPA) or across all semesters (CGPA)

📝 Worked Example

A B.E. student at Anna University has completed all 8 semesters with the following performance:

SemesterGPACreditsGPA × Credits
1st8.638.6 × 3 = 25.8
2nd9.6129.6 × 12 = 115.2
3rd8.698.6 × 9 = 77.4
4th7.797.7 × 9 = 69.3
5th8.1108.1 × 10 = 81.0
6th6.686.6 × 8 = 52.8
7th9.299.2 × 9 = 82.8
8th8.198.1 × 9 = 72.9
Total69577.2

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{577.2}{69} \approx \mathbf{8.37} \]

Got Questions?

Anna University CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Anna University grading scale?

Anna University uses a 10-point letter grading system:

O = 10 (Outstanding, 91–100%) · A+ = 9 (Excellent, 81–90%) · A = 8 (Very Good, 71–80%) · B+ = 7 (Good, 61–70%) · B = 6 (Average, 56–60%) · C = 5 (Satisfactory / Pass, 50–55%) · U = 0 (Re-Appearance, < 50%).

Additional designations: W (Withdrawn) and SA (Shortage of Attendance), both worth 0 grade points. Minimum grade to pass is C.

How is Anna University CGPA converted to percentage?

Anna University's official formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 10.

Examples: CGPA 8.37 → 83.7%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 90%  |  CGPA 7.5 → 75%.

This conversion applies to B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech and MBA programmes under Regulation 2021.

What CGPA is needed for First Class with Distinction at Anna University?

Per Anna University Regulation 2021:

First Class with Distinction: CGPA ≥ 8.50 with all courses passed in the first attempt (no reappearance) within the regular duration (5 years for regular entry / 4 years for lateral entry).

First Class: CGPA ≥ 6.50 with reappearance permitted, within 5/4 years.

Pass (without classification): CGPA < 6.50, awarded if all courses are passed.

Does Regulation 2021 apply to all Anna University programmes?

Regulation 2021 applies to all B.E. and B.Tech Full-Time programmes offered by non-autonomous colleges affiliated to Anna University, for students admitted from the academic year 2021-2022 onwards.

Autonomous colleges (like Saveetha, SSN, MIT, etc.) may follow their own variant of the grading regulations. Students from earlier batches follow their respective regulations (2017, 2019, etc.).

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA at Anna University?

At Anna University:

GPA (Grade Point Average) = performance in a single semester.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) = the weighted average of all GPAs earned across all completed semesters.

Both use the same formula: Σ(Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credit). Anna University specifically uses the term "GPA" instead of "SGPA" in its official regulations.

How are Anna University backlogs counted in CGPA?

A U grade (Re-Appearance) carries 0 grade points but the credits of the failed course are still counted in the CGPA denominator, lowering CGPA.

Once you clear the backlog through the supplementary exam, the new grade replaces the U and CGPA is recomputed. Note that any reappearance disqualifies you from First Class with Distinction.

Can I calculate my CGPA mid-programme?

Yes. You can compute a running CGPA using only the semesters you've completed so far. Just enter the GPA and total credits for each finished semester. The result reflects your cumulative performance up to that point.
