📝 Worked Example
A B.Tech student at VIT has completed all 8 semesters under FFCS with the following performance:
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 7.9 | 24 | 7.9 × 24 = 189.6 |
| 2nd | 8.8 | 25 | 8.8 × 25 = 220.0 |
| 3rd | 9.1 | 26 | 9.1 × 26 = 236.6 |
| 4th | 7.8 | 25 | 7.8 × 25 = 195.0 |
| 5th | 6.9 | 25 | 6.9 × 25 = 172.5 |
| 6th | 7.7 | 25 | 7.7 × 25 = 192.5 |
| 7th | 7.0 | 25 | 7.0 × 25 = 175.0 |
| 8th | 8.0 | 24 | 8.0 × 24 = 192.0 |
| Total | — | 199 | 1,573.2 |

📘 VIT Letter Grades & Grade Points
10-point grading scale used at VIT Vellore, Chennai, AP & Bhopal
| Marks Range | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 – 100 | S | 10 | Outstanding |
| 80 – 89 | A | 9 | Excellent |
| 70 – 79 | B | 8 | Very Good |
| 60 – 69 | C | 7 | Good |
| 50 – 59 | D | 6 | Average |
| 40 – 49 | E | 5 | Pass (minimum) |
| < 40 | F | 0 | Fail |
| — | N | 0 | Insufficient Attendance |
Note: Minimum grade to pass any VIT course is E (grade point 5). The N grade is awarded for shortage of attendance and counts as fail (0). Both F and N grades require re-registration of the course. Specific marks ranges may use both absolute and relative grading depending on course size — check your VIT campus academic handbook for variations.
🎓 VIT CGPA & Placement Categories
Common CGPA thresholds used by VIT placement cells (Super Dream / Dream / Day Share)

VIT CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the VIT grading scale?
VIT uses a 10-point letter grading system:
S = 10 (Outstanding, 90–100%) · A = 9 (Excellent, 80–89%) · B = 8 (Very Good, 70–79%) · C = 7 (Good, 60–69%) · D = 6 (Average, 50–59%) · E = 5 (Pass, 40–49%) · F = 0 (Fail) · N = 0 (Insufficient attendance).
Minimum grade to pass a course is E.
How is VIT CGPA converted to percentage?
VIT's official formula is the simplest possible: Percentage = CGPA × 10.
Examples: CGPA 8.72 → 87.2% | CGPA 9.0 → 90% | CGPA 7.5 → 75%.
This is commonly used on transcripts, resumes and higher-education applications.
Does this calculator work for all four VIT campuses?
Yes. The 10-point S-to-F grading scale and the CGPA formula are standardised across all four VIT campuses — VIT Vellore (main), VIT Chennai, VIT-AP (Amaravati) and VIT Bhopal — under the FFCS regulations.
Minor variations may exist by department; always check your campus-specific academic handbook.
What CGPA do I need for top placements at VIT?
Most VIT students aim for a CGPA above 8.5, which keeps them within the eligibility range for strong placement categories.
For "Super Dream" or highly selective companies (Microsoft, Amazon, Google), a CGPA of 8.7 to 9.0+ gives a noticeable edge. For "Dream" category companies, 7.5+ is typically required.
What is the FFCS at VIT?
FFCS = Fully Flexible Credit System. VIT's unique credit registration system allows students to choose courses, faculty members and time slots independently — instead of following a fixed timetable.
FFCS uses the same SGPA/CGPA computation as the standard CBCS — credits multiplied by grade points, divided by total credits.
What is the 'N' grade at VIT?
The N grade is awarded when a student does not meet the minimum attendance requirement in a course. It carries a grade point of 0 and is treated like a fail.
Students with an N grade must re-register for the course in a future semester. Until cleared, the credits remain in the CGPA denominator, lowering the CGPA.
Can I calculate my running CGPA mid-programme?
Yes. The CGPA calculator above lets you add only the semesters you've completed so far. The result is your cumulative running CGPA, useful for tracking progress against placement category thresholds before final placements begin.
