The Math

JNTUH CGPA Formula

Per the official R18 / R22 academic regulations published by JNTUH.

JNTUH CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{m} C_j \times G_j}{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{m} C_j} \]
CjCredits earned in the j-th course
GjGrade point earned in the j-th course
mTotal subjects from semester 1 to 8

📝 Worked Example

A B.Tech student has completed all 8 semesters. Their semester-wise SGPA and credits are:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
1st7.9187.9 × 18 = 142.2
2nd8.3198.3 × 19 = 157.7
3rd6.9186.9 × 18 = 124.2
4th9.2199.2 × 19 = 174.8
5th8.5188.5 × 18 = 153.0
6th7.6177.6 × 17 = 129.2
7th7.1177.1 × 17 = 120.7
8th8.8198.8 × 19 = 167.2
Total1451,169.0

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1169.0}{145} \approx \mathbf{8.06} \]

And the percentage equivalent (using the JNTUH formula below) is:

\[ \text{Percentage} = (8.06 - 0.5) \times 10 = \mathbf{75.6\%} \]

Got Questions?

JNTUH CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the JNTUH grading scale?

JNTUH uses a 10-point absolute grading system under R18 and R22 regulations:

O = 10 (Outstanding) · A+ = 9 (Excellent) · A = 8 (Very Good) · B+ = 7 (Good) · B = 6 (Above Average) · C = 5 (Average) · F = 0 (Fail).

How is JNTUH CGPA converted to percentage?

JNTUH uses the official formula: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10.

Examples: CGPA 8.0 → 75%  |  CGPA 7.5 → 70%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 85%.

What is the minimum CGPA for First Class with Distinction at JNTUH?

For most JNTUH B.Tech regulations, First Class with Distinction typically requires a CGPA of ≥ 7.75 (some interpretations use ≥ 8.00 — refer to your specific regulation document).

First Class: CGPA ≥ 6.75  ·  Second Class: CGPA ≥ 5.75  ·  Pass: CGPA ≥ 5.00.

Always verify against your batch's exact academic regulation PDF on the JNTUH website.

Can I calculate my CGPA before completing all 8 semesters?

Yes. You can compute a running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed so far. Just enter the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester.

How are JNTUH backlogs counted in CGPA?

An F (Fail) grade carries a grade point of 0, but the credits of that subject are still counted in the denominator of the CGPA formula. Once you clear the backlog by reappearing for the exam, the new grade replaces the F and CGPA is recomputed.

Is this calculator accurate for B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA and MCA?

Yes. JNTUH applies the same 10-point grading scale and CGPA formula across all programs (B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA) under R18 and R22 regulations.

What's the difference between JNTUH R18 and R22 regulations?

R18 applies to students who joined in academic year 2018–19 onwards. R22 applies to students who joined in 2022–23 onwards. Both share the same grading scale and CGPA formula — the differences are mainly in course structure, syllabus, and credit distribution. This calculator works for both.
