The Math

BBDU CGPA Formula

Per the official BBDU B.Arch Ordinance (2019) and CBCS regulations.

BBDU CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{C_1 \cdot S_1 + C_2 \cdot S_2 + \cdots + C_n \cdot S_n}{C_1 + C_2 + \cdots + C_n} \]
CiTotal credits earned in the i-th semester
SiSGPA of the i-th semester
nTotal number of semesters

Note: Per BBDU's official ordinance, the CGPA shall reflect the failed status in case of F grade(s) until the course(s) is/are passed. Once the course is passed in a subsequent examination, the CGPA reflects only the new grade — not the earlier failure.

📝 Worked Example — CGPA

A BBDU student has completed all 8 semesters with the following performance:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
17.8247.8 × 24 = 187.2
29.0309.0 × 30 = 270.0
38.0288.0 × 28 = 224.0
46.9276.9 × 27 = 186.3
56.5246.5 × 24 = 156.0
68.5298.5 × 29 = 246.5
78.1318.1 × 31 = 251.1
87.9317.9 × 31 = 244.9
Total2241,766.0

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1766}{224} \approx \mathbf{7.88} \]

And the percentage equivalent:

\[ \text{Percentage} = (7.88 \times 10) - 7.5 = \mathbf{71.3\%} \]

Got Questions?

BBDU CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BBDU grading scale?

BBDU (Babu Banarasi Das University) uses a 10-point absolute grading system with 5 letter grades:

O = 10 (Outstanding, ≥ 90%) · A = 9 (Excellent, 80–89.99%) · B = 8 (Good, 70–79.99%) · C = 7 (Fair, 60–69.99%) · D = 6 (Average / Minimum Pass, 50–59.99%) · F = 0 (Fail, < 50%) · AB = 0 (Absent).

Minimum grade to pass any course is D. Unlike most other CBCS universities, BBDU does not use plus grades (A+, B+, etc.).

How is BBDU CGPA converted to percentage?

BBDU's commonly cited formula is:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5

This is mathematically equivalent to (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. The 0.75 (or 7.5) is a normalisation factor that aligns BBDU's grading with traditional percentage benchmarks (similar to AKTU's official formula).

Examples: CGPA 8.0 → 72.5%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 82.5%  |  CGPA 7.5 → 67.5%.

Some sources cite simpler multipliers (× 10 or × 9.5) — always verify with the BBDU Office of Controller of Examination (OCOE).

What is the BBDU Award of Degree classification?

Per BBDU regulations:

  • First Division with Distinction: CGPA 7.50 and above
  • First Division: CGPA 6.00 to 7.49
  • Second Division: CGPA 5.00 to 5.99
  • Not eligible for degree: CGPA < 5.00
Does BBDU follow CBCS for B.Tech and B.Arch?

Yes. BBDU Lucknow follows a Semester-based Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for most of its undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including:

B.Tech, B.Arch, BBA, BCA, B.Pharm, BDS, BA LLB, BBA LLB, MBA, MCA, M.Pharm, M.Tech and Ph.D.

The Office of the Controller of Examination (OCOE) manages all examinations and result publications.

What does the AB grade mean at BBDU?

AB (Absent) is awarded when a student is absent from the end-semester examination. It carries 0 grade points.

Students with F or AB grades need to apply for a Carry Over Paper (COP) in the subsequent semester or during the special exam window. The CGPA will reflect the failed status until the course is passed; once passed, the CGPA reflects only the new grade.

How is BBDU SGPA different from CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is computed for a single semester using subject grades and credits.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all SGPAs across all completed semesters, weighted by total credits of each semester.

Both are calculated to two decimal places and shown on the BBDU final grade report card / transcript.

What's the difference between BBDU and BBD?

BBDU = Babu Banarasi Das University, established in 2010 — a state private university recognized by UGC, located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

BBD typically refers to the larger BBD Group of Educational Institutions, which also includes BBDU's affiliated colleges. The university grants degrees under the BBDU name.
