The Math

BBAU CGPA Formula

Per the BBAU CBCS regulations approved in the Academic Council's 82nd meeting (17 June 2025).

BBAU CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{k} (W_i \times G_i)}{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{k} W_i} \]
WiTotal credit weight (credits) of the i-th semester
GiSGPA of the i-th semester
kNumber of semesters completed

Note: At BBAU, CGPA and FGPA (Final Grade Point Average) are mathematically the same — FGPA is just the term used for the final cumulative value at the end of the programme.

📝 Worked Example

A BBAU student has completed all 8 semesters with the following semester-wise performance:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
1st8.016.58.0 × 16.5 = 132.0
2nd6.919.06.9 × 19.0 = 131.1
3rd8.323.08.3 × 23.0 = 190.9
4th7.924.07.9 × 24.0 = 189.6
5th8.920.08.9 × 20.0 = 178.0
6th6.821.06.8 × 21.0 = 142.8
7th9.627.09.6 × 27.0 = 259.2
8th7.724.07.7 × 24.0 = 184.8
Total174.51,408.4

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1408.4}{174.5} \approx \mathbf{8.07} \]

And the percentage equivalent (using the standard formula below):

\[ \text{Percentage} = 8.07 \times 10 = \mathbf{80.7\%} \]

Got Questions?

BBAU CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BBAU grading scale?

BBAU uses a 10-point CBCS grading system with grade-point ranges:

O (Outstanding) = ≥ 9.5 · A+ (Excellent) = 8.5–<9.5 · A (Very Good) = 7.5–<8.5 · B+ (Good) = 6.5–<7.5 · B (Above Average) = 5.5–<6.5 · C (Average) = 4.5–<5.5 · P (Pass) = 4.0–<4.5 · F (Fail) = <4.0 · Ab (Absent) = 0.

Minimum grade to pass a course is P.

How is BBAU CGPA converted to percentage?

BBAU does not publish a single official conversion formula. The two commonly accepted methods are:

  • Percentage = CGPA × 10 (standard UGC-CBCS — most widely accepted)
  • Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE-style — used by some institutions)

Examples: CGPA 8.0 → 80% (× 10) or 76% (× 9.5). Always verify with your BBAU department or the official transcript conversion certificate when applying for jobs or higher studies.

Are CGPA and FGPA the same at BBAU?

Yes. At BBAU, CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) and FGPA (Final Grade Point Average) are mathematically identical.

CGPA is computed at the end of each semester to show your cumulative progress, while FGPA is the term used for the final cumulative value displayed at the end of the programme on the consolidated grade sheet.

Does the BBAU calculator work for both UG and PG?

Yes. The same 10-point CBCS grading scale and CGPA formula apply to both UG and PG programmes at BBAU, as per the Academic Council regulations effective from 2025-26.

This covers B.Tech, B.Pharm, B.Sc, BBA, BCom, B.Ed, BA (UG) and M.Tech, M.Pharm, MBA, MCA, M.Sc, MA, LLM, M.Phil and Ph.D (PG).

What does the Ab grade mean at BBAU?

Ab (Absent) is awarded when a student is absent from the end-semester examination. It carries 0 grade points.

The course must be re-attempted in a future semester. Until cleared, the credits remain in the CGPA denominator, lowering the CGPA.

Why does the SGPA calculator ask for a grade point instead of a letter?

BBAU uses grade-point ranges rather than fixed integer grade points — so an A+ student could actually have a grade point of 8.6, 8.9, or 9.2 (anywhere in the 8.5–<9.5 range). Entering the exact grade point from your grade sheet gives a more accurate SGPA than using a fixed letter-to-number mapping.

You can either type your exact grade point or pick a representative value (10, 9, 8, 7…) from the suggestions in the input field.

Can I calculate my CGPA before completing all semesters?

Yes. You can compute a running CGPA using only the semesters you've completed. Just add the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester. The result reflects your cumulative performance up to that point.
