The Math

Andhra University CGPA Formula

Per the official Andhra University grading system circular (UGC-aligned, in force from admitted batch 2015-16).

AU CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{n} (S_j \times SC_j)}{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{n} SC_j} \]
SjSGPA of the j-th semester
SCjTotal credits of the j-th semester
nNumber of semesters completed

📝 Worked Example

An AU student has completed all 8 semesters with the following semester-wise performance:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
1st8.9198.9 × 19 = 169.1
2nd8.8208.8 × 20 = 176.0
3rd7.5217.5 × 21 = 157.5
4th9.3229.3 × 22 = 204.6
5th6.9256.9 × 25 = 172.5
6th8.6218.6 × 21 = 180.6
7th9.6229.6 × 22 = 211.2
8th8.0208.0 × 20 = 160.0
Total1701,431.5

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1431.5}{170} \approx \mathbf{8.42} \]

And the percentage equivalent:

\[ \text{Percentage} = 8.42 \times 10 = \mathbf{84.2\%} \]

Got Questions?

Andhra University CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Andhra University grading scale?

Andhra University uses a 10-point CBCS grading system:

O = 10 (Outstanding, > 90%) · A+ = 9 (Excellent, > 80–90%) · A = 8 (Very Good, > 70–80%) · B+ = 7 (Good, > 60–70%) · B = 6 (Above Average, > 55–60%) · C = 5 (Average, 50–55%) · P = 4 (Pass, 40 – < 50%) · F = 0 (Fail, < 40%).

Minimum grade to pass any course is P.

How is Andhra University CGPA converted to percentage?

The official AU grading circular states: "CGPA multiplied by 10 gives the aggregate percentage of marks obtained by a candidate."

So: Percentage = CGPA × 10. Examples: CGPA 8.42 → 84.2%  |  CGPA 7.5 → 75%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 90%.

For official transcripts, AU issues a CGPA to Percentage Conversion Certificate from the Controller of Examinations office.

What CGPA is needed for Distinction at Andhra University?

Distinction: CGPA ≥ 8.0 (≥ 80%).

First Class: 6.5 ≤ CGPA < 8.0 (65–79%).

Second Class: 5.5 ≤ CGPA < 6.5 (Arts/Commerce PG) or 5.0 ≤ CGPA < 6.5 (UG Engineering/Pharmacy).

Does CBCS apply to all Andhra University programmes?

Yes. From the admitted batch of 2015-16, CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) is implemented across all programmes:

  • Arts, Commerce & Management Studies (PG)
  • Science & Technology (UG & PG)
  • Engineering (UG & PG)
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • 3 & 5 year LL.B., LL.M.
  • M.Phil. and Ph.D.
From which semester is AU CGPA calculated?

As per the AU grading circular, CGPA is calculated from the II semester onwards up to the final semester. SGPA is computed for each individual semester starting from semester I.

Our calculator above lets you compute a running CGPA from whichever semesters you've completed so far.

How are AU backlogs counted in CGPA?

An F grade carries 0 grade points but the credits of the failed course are still counted in the CGPA denominator, lowering CGPA.

Once you clear the backlog through the supplementary exam, the new grade replaces the F and CGPA is recomputed. Students may also opt for CGPA improvement as per existing AU rules.

How do I get an official AU CGPA-to-Percentage certificate?

The official CGPA to Percentage Conversion Certificate can be requested from the AU Controller of Examinations office (E-5 block in the South Campus). You'll need to fill an application form, pay the prescribed fee via DD, and submit copies of your degree/provisional certificate.

This certificate is often required for international university admissions and government job applications.
