IIT Madras CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the IIT Madras grading scale?
IIT Madras uses a 10-point absolute grading system:
S = 10 (Outstanding) · A = 9 (Excellent) · B = 8 (Very Good) · C = 7 (Good) · D = 6 (Average) · E = 5 (Below Average / Pass for credit) · F = 0 (Fail).
Non-passing designations: U (Unsuccessful), W (Withdrawn), I (Incomplete) — these are excluded from CGPA computation. Minimum grade for credit is E.
How is IIT Madras CGPA converted to percentage?
IIT Madras has two date-specific formulas:
- Graduated on or after 11.11.2020:
Percentage = CGPA × 10 - Graduated on or before 10.11.2020:
Percentage = 55 + 10 × (CGPA − 6)(valid for CGPA ≥ 5.5)
For CGPA 8.0 the conversions differ: 80% (new) vs 75% (old). Always use the formula matching your graduation date.
Why does IIT Madras have two conversion formulas?
IIT Madras revised its CGPA-to-percentage conversion policy on 11 November 2020.
The pre-2020 formula 55 + 10(CGPA − 6) was a piecewise scheme that anchored CGPA 6 to a 55% passing equivalent. The newer formula CGPA × 10 is simpler and aligns with the UGC-CBCS standard used by most Indian universities, making the IITM transcript easier to interpret for employers and foreign universities.
What does U, W, I mean at IIT Madras?
U (Unsuccessful): Awarded when a student fails the course in the pass/fail mode (e.g., for non-credit or audit-type registrations).
W (Withdrawn): Course officially dropped within the prescribed period.
I (Incomplete): Work pending (e.g., medical reasons) and to be cleared in a subsequent semester.
All three are excluded from CGPA computation. The student must clear the course before earning the degree.
Does the calculator work for B.Tech, M.Tech, MS and IITM BS programmes?
Yes for on-campus programmes (B.Tech, Dual Degree, M.Tech, M.S., M.Sc., Ph.D.) which use the standard S–F 10-point scale.
The IITM BS in Data Science / Electronic Systems online programme uses the same scale but has term-specific assessment rules (quiz, assignment, OPPE weighting, bonus marks). The CGPA/SGPA formula is unchanged, but verify with the current term's grading document for course-level grade calculations.
What's the difference between SPI and SGPA at IIT Madras?
At IIT Madras, the official terms are SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average).
Some older IIT documents use SPI (Semester Performance Index) and CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) — these are the same metrics under different names, historically used at IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and others. The formulas and grade-point scales are identical.
Does IIT Madras use relative or absolute grading?
IIT Madras officially follows an absolute grading policy — meaning grades correspond to fixed marks bands set by the instructor.
However, in practice, many large classes use a normal-distribution-based relative grading approach where grades are assigned based on standard deviations from the class mean. This is at the instructor's discretion, per the course's grading scheme published at the start of the semester.
