📝 Worked Example
A B.Tech student has completed all 8 semesters with the following semester-wise performance:
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 8.9 | 15 | 8.9 × 15 = 133.5 |
| 2nd | 7.7 | 16 | 7.7 × 16 = 123.2 |
| 3rd | 8.5 | 17 | 8.5 × 17 = 144.5 |
| 4th | 8.6 | 18 | 8.6 × 18 = 154.8 |
| 5th | 9.1 | 19 | 9.1 × 19 = 172.9 |
| 6th | 7.1 | 20 | 7.1 × 20 = 142.0 |
| 7th | 6.9 | 18 | 6.9 × 18 = 124.2 |
| 8th | 9.2 | 20 | 9.2 × 20 = 184.0 |
| Total | — | 143 | 1,179.1 |

📘 RTU Letter Grades & Grade Points (CBCS)
12-grade scale used across all RTU programmes (A++ to F)
| Marks Range (xi) | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| xi ≥ 90 | A++ | 10 | Outstanding |
| 85 ≤ xi < 90 | A+ | 9.0 | Excellent |
| 80 ≤ xi < 85 | A | 8.5 | Very Good |
| 75 ≤ xi < 80 | B+ | 8.0 | Good |
| 70 ≤ xi < 75 | B | 7.5 | Above Average |
| 65 ≤ xi < 70 | C+ | 7.0 | Average |
| 60 ≤ xi < 65 | C | 6.5 | Pass |
| 55 ≤ xi < 60 | D+ | 6.0 | Pass |
| 50 ≤ xi < 55 | D | 5.5 | Pass |
| 45 ≤ xi < 50 | E+ | 5.0 | Pass |
| 40 ≤ xi < 45 | E | 4.0 | Pass (minimum) |
| xi < 40 | F | 0 | Fail |
Note: The minimum grade required to pass any RTU course is E (grade point ≥ 4.0). Marks below 40% are awarded the F grade and the student must reappear in the back examination.

RTU CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the RTU grading scale?
RTU uses a 12-grade CBCS system:
A++ = 10 (Outstanding) · A+ = 9.0 · A = 8.5 · B+ = 8.0 · B = 7.5 · C+ = 7.0 · C = 6.5 · D+ = 6.0 · D = 5.5 · E+ = 5.0 · E = 4.0 (minimum pass) · F = 0 (Fail).
Minimum grade to pass a course is E.
How is RTU CGPA converted to percentage?
The simplest commonly-used formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 10.
Examples: CGPA 8.25 → 82.5% | CGPA 7.5 → 75% | CGPA 6.0 → 60%.
For students from sessions earlier than 2018-19, some references use a slightly stricter formula: Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 0.75.
What CGPA is needed for First Division with Distinction at RTU?
First Division with Distinction: CGPA ≥ 7.0.
First Division: 6.0 ≤ CGPA < 7.0. Second Division: 5.0 ≤ CGPA < 6.0. Pass: 4.0 ≤ CGPA < 5.0.
Can I calculate my CGPA before completing all 8 semesters?
Yes. You can compute a running CGPA using the semesters you've completed so far. SGPA/CGPA is awarded after each semester at RTU and is rounded off to two decimal digits on the higher side.
How are RTU backlogs counted in CGPA?
If you remain absent or score zero in any external exam, you'll get an F grade and must reappear in the back examination. Per RTU CBCS rules, only courses with grade ≥ E (grade point ≥ 4.0) are counted toward CGPA. Once a backlog is cleared, the new grade replaces the F.
Does this calculator work for B.Tech, BCA & MBA?
Yes. RTU's CBCS guidelines apply the same 12-grade scale (A++ to F) and the same SGPA/CGPA formulas across B.Tech, BCA, MBA and other programmes. The only difference is total credit requirements, which vary by programme.
What's the difference between absolute and relative marks at RTU?
Under the RTU CBCS system, your raw absolute marks (pi) are converted into relative marks (xi) on a 100-point scale before the letter grade is assigned. The conversion formula used is xi = (pi ÷ pmax) × q, where pmax is the highest mark obtained and q is determined by the absolute-marks band (100, 89 or 79).
