How WLU GPA Is Calculated
Laurier uses a credit-weighted average of grade points. A 0.5 credit carries half the weight of a 1.0 credit.
📝 Worked Example
This is the exact example from Laurier's official Academic Calendar:
| Course | Credits | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Weighted Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 1.0 | A | 11 | 1.0 × 11 = 11.00 |
| Course 2 | 0.5 | C− | 4 | 0.5 × 4 = 2.00 |
| Course 3 | 0.25 | B+ | 9 | 0.25 × 9 = 2.25 |
| Total | 1.75 | — | — | 15.25 |

The Conversion Formula
Since WLU uses a 12-point scale, the proportional conversion is:
Example: A GPA of 8.71 converts to (8.71 ÷ 12) × 100 ≈ 72.58%.
Note: Laurier does not publish a single official GPA-to-percentage formula. For a single course, the most accurate approach is to map the letter grade to the midpoint of its official percentage band (see the grading scale below). The proportional formula above is an estimate for an overall GPA.

WLU GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Wilfrid Laurier University use?
Laurier uses a 12-point grade-point scale. A+ = 12, A = 11, A− = 10, B+ = 9, all the way down to F = 0.
How is the WLU GPA calculated?
Laurier uses a credit-weighted average. The grade point earned in a 0.5 credit is given half the weight of one earned in a 1.0 credit. GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits).
How do I convert my Laurier GPA to percentage?
For an overall GPA, use (GPA ÷ 12) × 100 as an estimate. For a single course, the most accurate method is to map the letter grade to the midpoint of its official percentage band — for example, A+ (90–100) ≈ 95%.
What happens if I repeat a failed course?
When a course is repeated, only the grade from the second attempt is used in the GPA. The first attempt stays on your transcript but does not count toward credit. Students may repeat up to 2.0 credits.
What GPA do I need for the Dean's Honour Roll?
Degree-seeking undergraduates need a minimum overall GPA of 10 (A−) across all courses taken from September 1 to August 31 to qualify for the Dean's Honour Roll.
