Calculate your UVic 9-point GPA, weighted average percentage, and 4.0 / 4.33-scale equivalents using the official University of Victoria grading scale and unit-weighted formula.

About

UVic & Its 9-Point Grading System

The University of Victoria (UVic), founded in 1963 in Victoria, British Columbia, is one of Canada's leading research universities. Since the 2014 Summer Session, UVic grades course achievement on a percentage scale (0–100%) that translates to a 9-point GPA / letter grade system. The 9-point GPA is the sole basis for calculating grade point averages and academic standing. Both the percentage grade and the letter grade appear on official and administrative transcripts. Each course is weighted by its unit value (a standard one-term course is usually 1.5 units).

Tool 1

UVic 9-Point GPA & Average Calculator

Enter each course with its percentage grade (as shown on your UVic transcript) and unit value. The calculator returns your 9-point GPA (UVic's official metric), your weighted average percentage, and the 4.0 / 4.33 equivalents for transfers and graduate applications.

Add Your Courses

Uses UVic's official 9-point scale (A+ 90–100% = 9 to F 0–49% = 0). Unit values are usually 1.5 per one-term course, 3.0 for full-year.

How to use the CGPA Calculator

  1. Enter your semester name or number (e.g. Semester 1, 1st, First).
  2. Enter the SGPA for that semester.
  3. Enter the total credits earned in that semester.
  4. Click “Add Semester”, then repeat for every completed semester.
  5. Click “Calculate CGPA” to see your cumulative result.

Although CGPA is normally awarded at the end of the programme, you can use this tool any time to see your current or running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed so far.

The Math

UVic 9-Point GPA Formula

Per the official UVic Office of the Registrar — GPA Calculations.

UVic 9-Point GPA
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point}_{0\text{–}9} \times \text{Unit Value})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Unit Value}} \]
Grade Point (0–9)9-point value for each letter grade band (A+ = 9 to F = 0)
Unit ValueUnit weight of each course (typically 1.5 per term at UVic)
Weighted Average Percentage
\[ \text{Weighted Avg (\%)} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Course \%} \times \text{Unit Value})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Unit Value}} \]
Course %Percentage grade shown on your UVic transcript (0–100)
NoteThe 9-point GPA — not the average % — is UVic's official metric for standing

📝 Worked Example

A UVic student completes 4 courses in a Winter Session term:

Course Grade (%) Letter Grade Pt Units Pt × Units
CSC 11082%A-71.57 × 1.5 = 10.5
MATH 10074%B51.55 × 1.5 = 7.5
ENGL 13568%C+31.53 × 1.5 = 4.5
PHYS 11091%A+91.59 × 1.5 = 13.5

Σ(Grade Pt × Units) = 10.5 + 7.5 + 4.5 + 13.5 = 36.0
Σ(Units) = 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 6.0

9-Point GPA = 36.0 ÷ 6.0 = 6.00 (B+ range)
Weighted Average % = (82 + 74 + 68 + 91) ÷ 4 = 78.75%  (simple mean, since all units are equal)

📌 Other Grade Notations at UVic

COM (Complete): Credit may or may not be assigned — ignored in the GPA calculation.

INP (In Progress): Course in progress — excluded from the sessional GPA.

N: Did not write the final exam or complete course requirements; counts as 0 in the GPA.

F/X, N/X: Failure / non-completion due to academic integrity; excluded from the cumulative GPA.

E (Conditional Supplemental): A passing supplemental result is recorded with a grade-point value of 1 (D equivalent) for the graduating average; it does not change the sessional GPA.

DEF (Deferred): The grade later obtained is used in the sessional GPA; if not completed, it becomes N (0).

🎓 Academic Standing at UVic

Sessional GPA on the 9-point scale determines academic standing:

  • Good standing: Sessional GPA ≥ 2.00.
  • University probation: Sessional GPA ≤ 1.99.
  • Required to withdraw: Continued performance ≤ 1.99 while on probation.

Individual faculties and programs may set higher continuation requirements. Verify with the UVic Academic Standing policy.

FAQ

UVic GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

Why does UVic use a 9-point scale instead of a 4.0 scale?

UVic's 9-point GPA scale (0–9) gives finer resolution than a 4.0 scale, distinguishing ten grade bands from A+ down to F. Since the 2014 Summer Session, grades are recorded as percentages that map to these 9 points, and the 9-point GPA is the sole basis for grade point averages and academic standing.

When you transfer to another institution or apply to graduate school, the receiving institution converts your UVic grades using its own scale — UVic publishes a reference 4.0 / 4.33 conversion table to help.

How do I convert my UVic 9-point GPA to a 4.0 scale?

Use UVic's official per-grade conversion: A (8) → 4.0, A- (7) → 3.67, B+ (6) → 3.33, B (5) → 3.0, B- (4) → 2.67, C+ (3) → 2.33, C (2) → 2.0, D (1) → 1.0, F (0) → 0. On the 4.33 scale, A+ (9) → 4.33.

Convert each course grade first, then take the unit-weighted average — converting the overall 9-point GPA directly is less accurate. The institution you transfer to is responsible for the final conversion, so always confirm with them.

What is a unit value and how does it affect my GPA?

UVic measures course weight in units, not credit hours. A standard one-term course is usually 1.5 units; a full-year course is typically 3.0 units. Your GPA is the unit-weighted average, so a high grade in a 3.0-unit course moves your GPA roughly twice as much as the same grade in a 1.5-unit course.

Courses with no unit value, or graded COM / INP, are not counted in the GPA.

Are both my percentage and letter grade shown on the transcript?

Yes. UVic official and administrative transcripts display the percentage grade, the corresponding letter grade, and comparative grading information (the class mean and number of students) for each course section. The fine-grained percentage helps with graduate school and external scholarship applications.

Which courses are excluded from my UVic GPA?

Courses graded COM, INP, N/X or F/X are excluded from the sessional GPA. Courses with an F or N grade are included and count as 0. Duplicate (DUP) and mutually-exclusive (M/X) courses are included in the calculation even though no units are awarded.

For the cumulative GPA, courses graded COM, F/X, N/X and exchange courses taken since Summer 2013 are also excluded.

Does this calculator work for UVic Law students?

This calculator uses UVic's undergraduate grading scale, which excludes the Faculty of Law. The Law program follows its own grading and cumulative GPA rules. Law students should consult the UVic Academic Calendar for the applicable scale.
