About

Kwantlen Polytechnic University & the 4.33 Grading System

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is a public polytechnic university in British Columbia, Canada, with campuses in Surrey, Richmond, Langley and Cloverdale (KPU Tech). Under Policy AC4 (Student Evaluation and Grading), KPU's standard grading system assigns letter grades on a 4.33 grade-point scale, where A+ carries the maximum 4.33 grade points.

Tool 1

Kwantlen Polytechnic University GPA Calculator

Add each course with its KPU letter grade and semester credit hours. Works for Term GPA, Program GPA and Institutional CGPA — most KPU courses are 3 credits.

Add Your Courses

Uses KPU's standard 4.33 scale: A+, A, A−, B+, B, B−, C+, C, C−, D, F.

How to use the CGPA Calculator

  1. Enter your semester name or number (e.g. Semester 1, 1st, First).
  2. Enter the SGPA for that semester.
  3. Enter the total credits earned in that semester.
  4. Click “Add Semester”, then repeat for every completed semester.
  5. Click “Calculate CGPA” to see your cumulative result.

Although CGPA is normally awarded at the end of the programme, you can use this tool any time to see your current or running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed so far.

The Math

Kwantlen Polytechnic University GPA Formula

Per the official KPU Grading System in the University Calendar.

KPU GPA
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Points} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Grade PointsValue 0–4.33 assigned to each letter grade
Credit HoursSemester credit hours per course (most are 3)

📝 Worked Example

A KPU student completes four courses in a term with the following grades (the calculation matches KPU's official sample):

CourseGradeGrade PointsCreditsTotal Grade Points
ANTH 1102B+3.3333 × 3.33 = 9.99
CHEM 1102B3.0055 × 3.00 = 15.00
CPSC 1102B−2.6733 × 2.67 = 8.01
ENGL 1102A4.0033 × 4.00 = 12.00
Total1445.00

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{Term GPA} = \frac{45.00}{14} \approx \mathbf{3.21} \]
Tool 2

KPU Grade to Percentage

KPU publishes an official percent-equivalent range for each letter grade. Pick a grade to see its official percentage band.

KPU Percentage Lookup

Select any KPU letter grade to see its official percent equivalent.

Note: KPU's grading scale maps each letter grade to a percentage range, not a single value. Unlike a flat 4.0 scale, KPU does not use a fixed multiplier (such as GPA × 25). Always use the official percent-equivalent range shown on the KPU Grading System page when reporting a percentage equivalent.

📘 KPU Letter Grades, Grade Points & Percent Equivalents

Standard 4.33 grading system used for all KPU courses assigned a letter grade

A4.0085 – 89Outstanding achievement
A−3.6780 – 84Excellent achievement

C−1.6756 – 59Marginal achievement (not valid as a prerequisite)
D1.0050 – 55Minimal achievement (not valid as a prerequisite)
F0.000 – 49Unsatisfactory achievement

Note: The minimum passing grade using KPU's standard grading system is D. A grade of C or higher is required when a course is used as a prerequisite. KPU's GPA caps at 4.33 (the A+ value), so cumulative GPAs above 4.00 are possible.

Got Questions?

KPU GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Kwantlen Polytechnic University grading scale?

KPU uses a standard 4.33 grading system:

A+ = 4.33 · A = 4.00 · A− = 3.67 · B+ = 3.33 · B = 3.00 · B− = 2.67 · C+ = 2.33 · C = 2.00 · C− = 1.67 · D = 1.00 · F = 0.00.

The minimum passing grade in the standard grading system is D.

How is the KPU GPA calculated?

Multiply the grade points for each course by its semester credit hours, add those totals, and divide by the total credit hours: GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits).

A separate GPA is calculated for each academic level. Most KPU courses are 3 credits.

How is a KPU grade converted to percentage?

KPU lists an official percent-equivalent range for each letter grade rather than a single multiplier: A+ = 90-100, A = 85-89, A− = 80-84, B+ = 76-79, B = 72-75, B− = 68-71, C+ = 64-67, C = 60-63, C− = 56-59, D = 50-55, F = 0-49.

Because KPU uses ranges, there is no fixed GPA × 25 formula — use the official band when an institution asks for a percentage.

What is the difference between Term GPA, Program GPA and Institutional CGPA?

Term GPA covers all courses taken at KPU in a specific term. Program GPA covers all courses applicable to a specific credential. Institutional CGPA covers all courses taken at KPU.

KPU also recognises a Transfer GPA (transfer and PLAR courses) and an Overall GPA (all courses combined).

What CGPA do I need to stay in good standing at KPU?

For programs in which letter grades are assigned, a minimum Institutional CGPA of 2.00 is expected. Falling below 2.00 after 9.0 credit hours leads to Academic Warning.

A Term GPA of 3.67 or higher (with 6+ credit hours in the term) qualifies for the Dean's Honour Roll.

How are repeated courses handled in the KPU GPA?

All grades stay on the transcript, but if a course is repeated to replace a failed or lower grade, only the higher grade is used to compute GPAs and academic standing.

Normally a course may not be repeated more than once.

Do MAS, EXP, AUD, W and TRF grades count in the GPA?

No. Competency-based grades (MAS, EXP, NCG) and GPA-neutral grades such as AEG, AUD, CIP, DEF, I, NA, PLA, TRF, W, WE do not factor into GPA calculations.

Only courses assigned a standard letter grade (A+ to F) are included in the GPA.
