The Math

How UCalgary GPA Is Calculated

UCalgary uses a weighted-average formula based on grade points and course units (half-courses = 3 units, full-courses = 6 units).

UCalgary GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Course Units})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Course Units}} \]
Grade PointNumerical value of the letter grade (0.00–4.00)
Course UnitsUnit value assigned to each course (typically 3 or 6)

📝 Worked Example

Suppose a student takes 5 half-courses (3 units each) and 1 full-course (6 units):

CourseUnitsLetter GradeGrade PointGrade × Units
MATH 2493A4.003 × 4.00 = 12.00
CPSC 2173A−3.703 × 3.70 = 11.10
ENGL 2013B+3.303 × 3.30 = 9.90
PHYS 2113B3.003 × 3.00 = 9.00
CHEM 2093C+2.303 × 2.30 = 6.90
ECON 3576B−2.706 × 2.70 = 16.20
Total2165.10

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{65.10}{21} \approx \mathbf{3.10} \]

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any UCalgary GPA between 0.00 and 4.00.

The Conversion Formula

UCalgary uses a 4.0 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \text{GPA} \times 25 \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.10, then Percentage = 3.10 × 25 = 77.50%.
