University of Northern British Columbia
GPA Calculator
Calculate your UNBC Semester GPA (SGPA) and Cumulative GPA (CGPA) using the official UNBC 4.33-scale letter grading system — exactly as quality points are computed on your transcript.
UNBC & Its 4.33-Scale Grading System
The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), founded in 1990 and based in Prince George, BC, is Canada's "Green University" and a leading small research university. UNBC assigns each course both a letter grade and a grade point on the official transcript, using the BC-standard 4.33-point scale (where A+ = 4.33 and A = 4.00). Your GPA is computed from quality points — each course's grade point multiplied by its credit hours — divided by total credit hours. This system has been in effect since September 2005.
UNBC Semester & Cumulative GPA Calculator
Enter each course with its UNBC letter grade and credit hours. The calculator returns your Semester GPA (SGPA) using UNBC's official quality-point method. Add a prior CGPA and earned credits to project your Cumulative GPA (CGPA).
Add Your Courses
Uses UNBC's official 4.33 letter scale (A+ = 4.33 to F = 0.00). Credit hours are typically 3 per course.
How to use the CGPA Calculator
- Enter your semester name or number (e.g. Semester 1, 1st, First).
- Enter the SGPA for that semester.
- Enter the total credits earned in that semester.
- Click “Add Semester”, then repeat for every completed semester.
- Click “Calculate CGPA” to see your cumulative result.
Although CGPA is normally awarded at the end of the programme, you can use this tool any time to see your current or running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed so far.

| BIOL 101 | A− | 3.67 | 3 | 3 × 3.67 = 11.01 |
| ENGL 101 | A+ | 4.33 | 3 | 3 × 4.33 = 12.99 |
| PHIL 101 | B | 3.00 | 3 | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| ARTS 101 | A− | 3.67 | 3 | 3 × 3.67 = 11.01 |
| BIOL 102 | B− | 2.67 | 4 | 4 × 2.67 = 10.68 |
| Total | — | — | 16 | 54.69 |

UNBC GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA at UNBC?
Semester GPA (SGPA) divides total quality points earned in one semester by total credit hours taken that semester. Cumulative GPA (CGPA) covers all UNBC courses across all completed semesters — total quality points to date divided by total credit hours undertaken to date.
The CGPA is the value used to determine good academic standing and academic probation.
How are quality points calculated at UNBC?
Quality points = Grade Point × Credit Hours. For example, an A− (3.67 grade point) in a 3-credit course earns 3 × 3.67 = 11.01 quality points.
Your GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the sum of all credit hours that received a graded value.
Why does UNBC use a 4.33 scale instead of 4.0?
On the 4.33 scale (the BC standard), A+ = 4.33 and A = 4.00, creating a distinction at the top for exceptional performance. On a plain 4.0 scale, A+ and A both equal 4.0.
When you apply to a school that uses a 4.0 scale, the receiving institution applies its own conversion, so your reported GPA may differ from your UNBC CGPA.
Which grades do not count toward my UNBC GPA?
Grades of P (Passing) and W (Withdrawn) carry no numerical value and are excluded from the GPA. Similarly, AEG, DEF, AUD, IMP and NGR are not included in the academic average.
Only courses assigned a numeric grade point (A+ through F) are used in the calculation. This calculator excludes any non-numeric grades automatically — simply do not add them.
What CGPA do I need to stay in good standing and graduate?
Per UNBC Academic Regulations 47 & 48, you must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. A CGPA below 2.00 places you on Academic Probation.
Students are not permitted to graduate while on Academic Probation, so a CGPA of at least 2.00 is required to complete your degree.
How are repeated courses treated in the UNBC GPA?
Repeated courses are handled under UNBC Academic Regulation 30. The treatment of a repeated course in the GPA calculation depends on that regulation, so check the current Academic Calendar for how the original and repeated attempts are counted.
This calculator computes a straightforward weighted GPA from the courses you enter; it does not automatically apply repeat-course rules.
