FAQ

Emily Carr GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does Emily Carr University use?

How is my GPA calculated at Emily Carr?

Multiply each course's grade point by its credits, add up the totals, and divide by total credits attempted: GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits).

Your semester GPA covers one term; your cumulative GPA covers all credit courses attempted at ECU, including repeated courses.

Can my Emily Carr GPA go above 4.0?

Yes. Because A+ is worth 4.33 grade points, a semester of strong A+ results can push your GPA above 4.00. ECU's transcript uses the full 4.33 scale, though some external evaluators may cap a reported GPA at 4.00.

What is the minimum GPA to stay in good standing at Emily Carr?

You need a minimum term and cumulative GPA of 2.00. A GPA below 2.0 places you On Academic Probation. If you remain below 2.0 after probation you Continue on Academic Probation, and if both your term and cumulative GPA fall below 2.0 you are Required to Withdraw.

Do withdrawals, Credit, or Pass/Fail grades affect my GPA?

No. Grades of W (Withdrawal), CR (Credit), P/F (Pass/Fail) and AEG (Aegrotat) are all GPA-neutral — they don't raise or lower your grade point average. AEG and CR still carry credit toward your degree.

If I repeat a failed course, does the F disappear?

No. The original F stays on your transcript, and both the F and the new grade are counted in your cumulative GPA. Per ECU Policy 4.16, F grades are never removed from the student record.
