How Carleton CGPA Is Calculated
Carleton uses a credit-weighted average of grade points. Grade points for a 1.0-credit course are adjusted proportionately for other credit values.
📝 Worked Example
Suppose a student takes 5 courses with the following grades and credit weights:
| Course | Credits | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Grade Points × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 1.0 | A | 11 | 11 × 1.0 = 11.0 |
| Course 2 | 0.5 | B+ | 9 | 9 × 0.5 = 4.5 |
| Course 3 | 1.0 | A− | 10 | 10 × 1.0 = 10.0 |
| Course 4 | 0.5 | B | 8 | 8 × 0.5 = 4.0 |
| Course 5 | 1.0 | C+ | 6 | 6 × 1.0 = 6.0 |
| Total | 4.0 | — | — | 35.5 |

Convert Grade → Percentage
Each Carleton letter grade maps to an official percentage band, not a single linear formula.
Why There's No Single CGPA → % Formula
Carleton's grade points (0–12) and percentage bands are not perfectly linear, so the university does not publish one equation to turn a CGPA number into a single percentage. Instead, each letter grade carries a defined percentage range.
Example: a grade of A− equals a grade point of 10 and a percentage of 80–84%.

Carleton CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What grading scale does Carleton University use?
Carleton uses a 12-point grade-point scale: A+ = 12, A = 11, A− = 10, B+ = 9, all the way down to D− = 1 and F = 0. The grade points listed are for 1.0-credit courses.
How is my Carleton CGPA calculated?
Divide your total grade points by your total credits: CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). For a 0.5-credit course the grade point is halved — a B+ worth 9 points for 1.0 credit is worth 4.5 points for 0.5 credit.
How do I convert a Carleton grade to a percentage?
Carleton defines a percentage band per letter grade rather than one CGPA formula. For example A = 85–89%, B = 73–76%, C = 63–66% and F is below 50%. Use the converter above to see the exact band for any grade.
Are F grades and repeated courses included in the CGPA?
An F counts as 0.0 grade points in the CGPA until it is removed through course repetition or replacement. When a course is repeated, the best grade is used in the CGPA calculation.
