The Math

Laurentian University GPA Formula

Per the official Laurentian University grading scheme and academic regulations.

LU GPA
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credits})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credits}} \]
Grade PointValue 0–10 assigned to each letter grade
CreditsCredit weighting assigned to each course

📝 Worked Example

A Laurentian University student has completed 5 courses with the following grades:

CourseCreditsLetter GradeGrade PointCredit Points
Course 16A+106 × 10 = 60
Course 26B+76 × 7 = 42
Course 33B63 × 6 = 18
Course 43C+53 × 5 = 15
Course 56C46 × 4 = 24
Total24159

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{159}{24} \approx \mathbf{6.62} \]

And the percentage equivalent:

\[ \text{Percentage} = (6.62 \times 5) + 42.5 = \mathbf{75.62\%} \]
Tool 2

Laurentian GPA to Percentage

The official Laurentian conversion: Percentage = (GPA × 5) + 42.5.

LU Percentage Converter

Enter any GPA between 0 and 10.

Note: Laurentian University states that because the letter grades are non-linear with respect to the percentage scale, the conversion at the extremes (GPA of 0 to 1, or GPA of 10) will not give an accurate percentage. Use (GPA × 5) + 42.5 as the official approximation for the mid-range.

Got Questions?

Laurentian University GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Laurentian University grading scale?

For courses completed after August 2014, Laurentian uses a 0–10 scale:

A+ = 10 (Exceptional) · A = 9 (Outstanding) · A− = 8 (Excellent) · B+ = 7 (Very Good) · B = 6 (Good) · C+ = 5 (Satisfactory) · C = 4 (Adequate) · D+ = 3 (Passable) · D = 2 (Marginal) · E = 1 (Failure) · F = 0 (Failure).

How is Laurentian University GPA converted to percentage?

Laurentian's official conversion is: Percentage = (GPA × 5) + 42.5.

Examples: GPA 8.0 → 82.5%  |  GPA 6.0 → 72.5%  |  GPA 5.0 → 67.5%.

The university notes the conversion is not accurate at the extremes (GPA 0–1, or GPA of 10) because letter grades are non-linear with the percentage scale.

What GPA is needed to graduate with distinction?

For four-year undergraduate degrees: Honours = GPA 5.5–7.4 (70%–79.4%); Cum Laude = GPA 7.5–8.9 (79.5%–87.4%); Magna Cum Laude = GPA 9.0 and above (87.5%+).

The overall GPA must be calculated on a minimum of 45 credits for a three-year degree or 60 credits for a four-year degree.

What do the I, P, S, T, W, X and Z symbols mean?

I: Incomplete course work, no credit granted. P: Supplemental exam. S: Satisfactory (where a percentage grade is inappropriate).

T: In Progress. W: Withdrawn. X: Failure — academic dishonesty. Z: Auditor.

Are failed courses included in the GPA?

Yes. Since the Fall 2014 semester, failures (E = 1 and F = 0) are included in both the session and overall GPA.

Before the new grading scheme, failed courses did not count in the session or overall GPA. Only credits completed at Laurentian University are included in the calculation.

How are courses taken before September 2014 graded?

For courses completed between September 1977 and August 2014, Laurentian used a letter scale based on percentage ranges: A = 80–100% (Excellent), B = 70–79% (Good), C = 60–69% (Satisfactory), D = 50–59% (Minimum), F = 0–49% (Failure).

This calculator uses the current 0–10 scale for courses completed after August 2014.
