The Math

How University of Manitoba GPA Is Calculated

UM divides total Quality Points by total credit hours attempted, where Quality Points = grade point × credit hours.

UM GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Grade PointNumerical value of the letter grade (0.0–4.5)
Quality PointsGrade point × credit hours of the course

📝 Worked Example

Suppose a student takes 5 courses with the following grades and credit hours:

CourseCredit HoursLetter GradeGrade PointQuality Points
Course 13A+4.53 × 4.5 = 13.5
Course 23A4.03 × 4.0 = 12.0
Course 33B+3.53 × 3.5 = 10.5
Course 46B3.06 × 3.0 = 18.0
Course 53C+2.53 × 2.5 = 7.5
Total1861.5

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{61.5}{18} \approx \mathbf{3.42} \]

Enter any UM GPA between 0.0 and 4.5.

The Conversion Formula

UM uses a 4.5 maximum scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.5}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 4.0, then Percentage = (4.0 ÷ 4.5) × 100 ≈ 88.89%.

Note: UM does not publish an official GPA-to-percentage formula. This proportional conversion is a widely used approximation; always verify with the institution you are applying to.

Got Questions?

University of Manitoba GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does the University of Manitoba use?

UM uses a 4.5 grade-point scale. A+ = 4.5, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 (lowest passing grade), and F = 0.0.

How do I convert UM GPA to percentage?

Since UM uses a 4.5 maximum, use Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.5) × 100. For example, a GPA of 4.0 converts to about 88.9%. This is an approximation, as UM does not publish an official percentage formula.

What are Quality Points?

Quality Points = grade point value × credit hours. For example, 3 credit hours with a grade of B (3.0) = 9.0 Quality Points. Your GPA is total Quality Points divided by total credit hours attempted.

Do Pass/Fail courses affect my GPA?

No. Courses graded on a pass/fail basis carry no numerical grade point, so they do not affect your grade point average.

How are repeated courses counted?

For the Degree GPA, the highest grade counts. However, all attempts of a repeated course are included in the Term and Cumulative GPAs.
