The Math

How U of G GPA Is Calculated

Guelph uses the standard weighted-average formula based on grade points and credit weights.

U of G GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credits})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credits}} \]
Grade PointNumerical value of the letter grade (0.0–4.0)
CreditsCredit weight assigned to each course (e.g. 0.50)

📝 Worked Example

Suppose a student takes 6 half-credit courses with the following grades:

CourseCreditsLetter GradeGrade PointCredit Points
Course 10.50A+4.00.50 × 4.0 = 2.00
Course 20.50A3.90.50 × 3.9 = 1.95
Course 30.50A−3.70.50 × 3.7 = 1.85
Course 40.50B+3.30.50 × 3.3 = 1.65
Course 50.50B3.00.50 × 3.0 = 1.50
Course 60.50C+2.30.50 × 2.3 = 1.15
Total3.0010.10

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{10.10}{3.00} \approx \mathbf{3.37} \]

Got Questions?

U of G GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does the University of Guelph use?

Guelph uses a 4.0 grade-point scale based on the OUAC conversion table. A+ = 4.0, A = 3.9, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, all the way down to F = 0.0.

How do I convert U of G GPA to percentage?

Use this formula: Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.

What's the difference between undergraduate and graduate grading?

Undergraduate: Grades range from A+ down to F (0–49%). Each band has its own grade point.

Graduate: The pass threshold is higher — anything below 65% is recorded as a failure (F).

Why do A+ and A have different grade points at Guelph?

Unlike some Canadian schools that cap both at 4.0, the OUAC conversion used by Guelph assigns A+ = 4.0 and A = 3.9, so a 90%+ score gives a slightly higher GPA contribution than an 85–89% score.

Can I calculate my running GPA mid-program?

Yes. Simply add all the courses you've completed so far in the calculator above. The result will be your cumulative GPA based on completed credits.
