The Math

York University Cumulative GPA Formula

Per the official York University Undergraduate Calendar — averages are credit-weighted across all completed courses.

York Cumulative GPA
\[ \text{Cumulative GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{m} (C_i \times G_i)}{\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{m} C_i} \]
CiCredits of the i-th course
GiGrade point earned in the i-th course (9-point scale)
mTotal courses across all completed terms

📝 Worked Example

A York University student completes four terms with the following results:

TermTerm GPACreditsGPA × Credits
Fall 20227.20157.20 × 15 = 108.0
Winter 20236.80156.80 × 15 = 102.0
Fall 20237.50157.50 × 15 = 112.5
Winter 20248.00158.00 × 15 = 120.0
Total60442.5

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{Cumulative GPA} = \frac{442.5}{60} \approx \mathbf{7.38} \]

A cumulative GPA of 7.38 on the 9-point scale corresponds to a B+ standing — competitive for Dean's Honour Roll eligibility in most York faculties.

Got Questions?

York University GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does York University use?

York University uses a distinctive 9-point GPA scale (0 to 9), unique among Canadian universities:

A+ = 9 (90–100) · A = 8 (80–89) · B+ = 7 (75–79) · B = 6 (70–74) · C+ = 5 (65–69) · C = 4 (60–64) · D+ = 3 (55–59) · D = 2 (50–54) · E = 1 (40–49, fail) · F = 0 (0–39).

Minimum passing grade is D (50%). It applies across all faculties at Keele and Glendon.

How is the York cumulative GPA calculated?

York averages are credit-weighted: Cumulative GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits).

Example: an A (8) in a 3-credit course and a B+ (7) in a 3-credit course → (8×3 + 7×3) ÷ 6 = 45 ÷ 6 = 7.50.

Only courses taken at York University are included in the average.

What does the E grade mean at York?

The E grade (40–49%) is a failing grade — officially "Marginally Failing" — even though it carries 1 grade point.

Per the York Undergraduate Calendar, a passed course requires D or better (50%+). An E cannot satisfy prerequisites or program requirements, and the course may need to be repeated.

York has two failing grades: E (marginal failure) and F (failure).

What's the minimum GPA for good academic standing?

York generally requires a cumulative GPA of at least 4.0 (C) for good academic standing.

Falling below the threshold can lead to academic warning, probation, or required withdrawal. Faculties such as Schulich, Lassonde and Health may impose higher requirements for progression and graduation.

How do I convert my York GPA to a 4.0 scale?

York does not use a 4.0 scale internally. A common approximate conversion is (York GPA ÷ 9) × 4.

Example: York GPA 7.20 → (7.20 ÷ 9) × 4 ≈ 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

Credential evaluators such as WES and individual institutions may apply their own conversion tables, so always confirm the official policy of whoever is requesting the GPA.

Does this work for both Keele and Glendon campuses?

Yes. Both the Keele and Glendon campuses use the same 9-point grading scale defined in the York University Undergraduate Calendar, and the GPA calculation method is identical across all undergraduate faculties.
