Ryerson / TMU & the 4.33 Grading System
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) — a public research university in downtown Toronto, Ontario, known as Ryerson University until April 2022 — uses an official 4.33 grading scale. Unlike most 4.0-scale systems, an A+ is worth 4.33 grade points (above the A at 4.00). Academic performance is tracked by the Term GPA (TGPA) for one term and the Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across the whole program, governed by Senate Policy 170(a).
Ryerson / TMU GPA & CGPA Calculator

Ryerson / TMU GPA Formula
Per the official TMU Undergraduate Academic Calendar — Grading, Promotion and Academic Standing.
📝 Worked Example
A TMU student completes four single-term courses and one full-year (multi-term) course:
| Course | Grade | Grade Points | Weight | Weight × GP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ITM 100 | A | 4.00 | 1.00 | 1.00 × 4.00 = 4.00 |
| QMS 102 | B+ | 3.33 | 1.00 | 1.00 × 3.33 = 3.33 |
| LAW 122 | B− | 2.67 | 1.00 | 1.00 × 2.67 = 2.67 |
| CMN 279 | A− | 3.67 | 1.00 | 1.00 × 3.67 = 3.67 |
| CPS 109 (full-year) | B | 3.00 | 2.00 | 2.00 × 3.00 = 6.00 |
| Total | — | — | 6.00 | 19.67 |
Plugging into the formula (rounded to two decimal places):
A CGPA of 3.28 sits in the B range — comfortably above the 1.67 threshold required for a Clear academic standing at TMU.
TMU Percentage to Grade & GPA
TMU publishes exact percentage bands for each letter grade. Enter a course percentage to find its letter grade and grade point.
TMU Percentage Converter
Enter any percentage between 0 and 100.
Note: TMU transcripts report letter grades and grade points on the 4.33 scale, not a cumulative percentage. This tool maps a single course percentage to its official band; it is not an overall GPA-to-percentage conversion. Some courses use relative grading, so the exact percentage cut-offs can vary by instructor.

🎓 TMU Academic Standing & Honours Thresholds
Key CGPA and term-GPA (TGPA) benchmarks per Senate Policy 170(a)
| GPA | Threshold |
|---|---|
| ≥ 3.67 | Dean's List — Faculty of Arts (TGPA, full-time, 4 passed courses) |
| ≥ 3.50 | Dean's List — Ted Rogers School (Fall–Winter year GPA) |
| ≥ 1.67 | Clear standing — continue studies without restriction |
| 1.00 – 1.66 | Probationary — Probationary Contract & reduced course load |
| < 1.00 | Required to Withdraw (RTW) — suspended for at least 12 months |
Note: A TGPA below 1.67 while already on Probation can also trigger RTW, even when CGPA is above 1.00. No student is assigned RTW in their first semester at TMU. Dean's List criteria vary by faculty — always verify with your program or the Office of the Registrar.
Ryerson / TMU GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What grading scale does Ryerson University (TMU) use?
TMU uses an official 4.33 grading scale. Each letter grade maps to a percentage band and a grade point:
A+ = 4.33 (90–100%) · A = 4.00 (85–89%) · A− = 3.67 (80–84%) · B+ = 3.33 (77–79%) · B = 3.00 (73–76%) · B− = 2.67 (70–72%) · C+ = 2.33 (67–69%) · C = 2.00 (63–66%) · C− = 1.67 (60–62%) · D+ = 1.33 (57–59%) · D = 1.00 (53–56%) · D− = 0.67 (50–52%) · F = 0.00 (0–49%).
An A+ (4.33) is worth more than an A (4.00) — the key feature of the scale. The minimum passing grade is D−.
How does TMU calculate term GPA and CGPA?
Each grade point is multiplied by the course weight to give a weighted grade point. CGPA = Σ(Course Weight × Grade Points) ÷ Σ(Course Weights), rounded to two decimal places.
Single-term courses normally carry a weight of 1.00 and multi-term (full-year) courses a weight of 2.00. The TGPA uses only courses from one term; the CGPA uses all program courses. Designations such as CNC, PSD, INC, INP, FLD and DEF are excluded.
Is Ryerson University the same as Toronto Metropolitan University?
Yes. Ryerson University officially became Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in April 2022.
The 4.33 GPA scale and academic policies under Senate Policy 170(a) are unchanged, and degrees, transcripts and credentials issued under the Ryerson name remain fully valid and recognised.
What CGPA do I need for good academic standing?
A CGPA of 1.67 or higher earns a Clear standing and lets you continue without restriction. A CGPA from 1.00 to 1.66 results in Probationary standing, requiring a signed Probationary Contract and a reduced course load.
A CGPA below 1.00 — or a TGPA below 1.67 while on probation — results in Required to Withdraw (RTW), a suspension of at least 12 months. No student is assigned RTW in their first semester.
What is the Dean's List GPA at TMU?
Criteria vary by faculty. In the Ted Rogers School of Management, a GPA of 3.50 or higher across the Fall–Winter year (clear standing, no failed courses, averaging at least 4.0 billing units per term) qualifies.
In the Faculty of Arts, full-time students need a TGPA of 3.67 or higher with at least four passed courses and a clear academic record. Always confirm the exact criteria with your specific faculty.
Can I repeat a course to improve my GPA?
Yes. A course may be attempted up to three times (initial enrolment plus two repeats). When you repeat a course, the most recent grade replaces the previous one in GPA calculations — even if it is lower — though both attempts stay on the transcript.
A GPA Adjustment Request can also be submitted to exclude or replace certain courses in your CGPA, subject to program approval.
