The Math

How Virginia Tech GPA Is Calculated

VT multiplies each grade point by credit hours to get quality credits, then divides total quality credits by total hours attempted.

Virginia Tech GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Credits}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Hours Attempted}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Quality CreditsGrade point value × credit hours for each course
Hours AttemptedTotal graded hours (excludes P/F, W, and X courses)

📝 Worked Example

An example using three courses on the VT scale:

CourseCredit HoursGradeGrade PointQuality Credits
ENGL 11053.0A4.03 × 4.0 = 12.0
MATH 12253.0B−2.73 × 2.7 = 8.1
CHEM 10353.0C+2.33 × 2.3 = 6.9
Total9.027.0

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{27.0}{9.0} = \mathbf{3.00} \]

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA

The following marks carry no grade points and do not count in GPA hours: P (Passing, under Pass/Fail), S (Satisfactory), W (Course Withdrawn), X (Continuing Course), I (Incomplete), and NR (Not Reported).

An I (Incomplete) or X automatically converts to an F if requirements are not met within the allowed time. An NG (No Grade) is computed as an F when determining GPA.
