The Math

How UT Dallas GPA Is Calculated

UTD multiplies each grade point by credit hours to get grade points, then divides total grade points by graded semester hours. GPAs are rounded to three decimal places.

UTD GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Grade Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Graded Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Grade PointsGrade point value × credit hours for each course
Graded HoursTotal credit hours for which a grade other than I, NC, or CR is received

📝 Worked Example

A three-course example using UTD grade points:

CourseCredit HoursGradeGrade PointGrade Points Earned
CS 13363.0A4.0003 × 4.000 = 12.000
MATH 24134.0B−2.6704 × 2.670 = 10.680
HIST 13013.0C+2.3303 × 2.330 = 6.990
Total10.029.670

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{29.670}{10.0} \approx \mathbf{2.967} \]
