The Math

How UTA GPA Is Calculated

UT Arlington multiplies each grade point by credit hours to get grade points earned, then divides total grade points by total graded hours.

UTA GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Grade Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Graded Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Grade PointsGrade point value × credit hours for each course
Graded HoursTotal hours undertaken (excludes I, P, Q, W, Z)

📝 Worked Example

A typical UTA example using three courses:

CourseCredit HoursGradeGrade PointGrade Points
ENGL 13013.0A4.003 × 4.00 = 12.00
MATH 13023.0B3.003 × 3.00 = 9.00
HIST 13113.0C2.003 × 2.00 = 6.00
Total9.027.00

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{27.00}{9.0} = \mathbf{3.00} \]
Tool 2

UTA GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your 4.0-scale UTA GPA to an equivalent percentage instantly.

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any UTA GPA between 0.0 and 4.0.

The Conversion Formula

UTA uses a 4.0 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \text{GPA} \times 25 \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.5, then Percentage = 3.5 × 25 = 87.50%.

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA

Courses graded I (Incomplete), P (Pass), Q, W (Withdrawn), or Z carry no grade points and are not counted toward hours undertaken for GPA purposes. These symbols still appear on the official transcript.

A course passed on a pass/fail basis counts as hours undertaken but earns no grade points.
