GPA Calculator

Calculate your UTK GPA and convert it to percentage using the official plus/minus 4.0 quality-point scale used on your Volunteer transcript.

Tool 1

UTK GPA Calculator

Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours. Calculation uses UT Knoxville's official quality-point values.

Add Your Courses

UTK uses a plus/minus 4.0 scale. For undergraduates, A+ is recorded as an A (4.0).

The Math

How UTK GPA Is Calculated

UTK multiplies each grade value by credit hours to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total attempted hours.

UTK GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Attempted Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Value} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Quality PointsGrade value × credit hours for each course
Attempted HoursTotal graded credit hours (excludes S, NC, W, P, etc.)

📝 Worked Example

A sample semester using four courses:

CourseCredit HoursGradeGrade ValueQuality Points
ENGL 1013.0A4.03 × 4.0 = 12.00
MATH 1414.0B−2.74 × 2.7 = 10.80
HIST 2213.0B+3.33 × 3.3 = 9.90
CHEM 1204.0D1.04 × 1.0 = 4.00
Total14.036.70

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{36.70}{14.0} \approx \mathbf{2.62} \]
Tool 2

UTK GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your 4.0-scale UTK GPA to an equivalent percentage instantly.

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any UTK GPA between 0.0 and 4.0.

The Conversion Formula

UTK uses a 4.0 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \text{GPA} \times 25 \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.5, then Percentage = 3.5 × 25 = 87.50%.

The following marks carry no quality points and are not used in the GPA calculation: I (Incomplete — defaults to F after one calendar year), NC (No Credit), NP (No Progress), NR (Non-reported), P (Progress), S (Satisfactory), SI (Satisfactory Incomplete), and W (Withdrawn).

An S represents work equivalent to a grade of A, B, or C for undergraduates, while NC represents work at the level of C−, D+, D, D−, or F.

Got Questions?

UTK GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does the University of Tennessee use?

UT Knoxville uses a plus/minus 4.0 quality-point scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, and F = 0.0.

Is A+ worth more than 4.0 at UTK?

No. For undergraduate students, A+ is not assigned separate quality points — it is recorded as an A worth 4.0. An A+ carries 4.3 quality points only at the College of Law, which uses its own 4.3 scale.

How does UTK calculate my GPA?

UTK divides the sum of quality points earned by the sum of attempted hours for all courses receiving a grade used in the GPA. Quality points = grade value × credit hours. The GPA is rounded to two decimal places.

How do I convert my UTK GPA to a percentage?

Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.

Which grades are left out of my UTK GPA?

Marks of I, NC, NP, NR, P, S, SI, and W carry no quality points and are excluded from the GPA calculation, so they don't affect your GPA.
