How UofSC GPA Is Calculated
UofSC multiplies each grade's quality-point factor by credit hours to get grade points, then divides total grade points by attempted hours.
📝 Worked Example
An example using three courses on the UofSC scale:
| Course | Credit Hours | Grade | Factor | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ENGL 101 | 3.0 | A | 4.0 | 3 × 4.0 = 12.0 |
| MATH 122 | 4.0 | B+ | 3.5 | 4 × 3.5 = 14.0 |
| HIST 111 | 3.0 | C+ | 2.5 | 3 × 2.5 = 7.5 |
| Total | 10.0 | — | — | 33.5 |

📌 Additional Grades & Symbols
The following marks carry no quality points and do not affect GPA: AUD (Audit), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), NG (No Grade), NR (No Report), S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory), W (Withdrawn Without Penalty), and academic forgiveness symbols.
FN (Failure for Non-Attendance) and WF (Withdrawn With Penalty) count as 0.0, the same as an F. An NR is changed to an F after one semester if no grade is reported.
UofSC GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does the University of South Carolina use?
UofSC uses a standard 4.0 grade-point scale with plus grades only and no minus grades: A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D+ = 1.5, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Each plus grade adds 0.5, not the 0.33 used at many other schools.
Does UofSC use minus grades like A− or B−?
No. The University of South Carolina does not use minus grades. Only plus grades (B+, C+, D+) exist, and each is worth 0.5 above the base letter grade.
How do I convert my UofSC GPA to a percentage?
Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.
What is the difference between FN and a regular F at UofSC?
Both count as 0.0 in your GPA. FN means Failure for Non-Attendance and is assigned when a student stops attending, while F is a standard failing grade. WF (Withdrawn With Penalty) also counts as 0.0.
Which grades are left out of my UofSC GPA?
Marks of AUD, I, IP, NG, NR, S/U, and W, along with academic forgiveness symbols, carry no quality points and are excluded from the GPA calculation, so they don't affect your GPA.
