The Math

How UNT GPA Is Calculated

UNT multiplies each grade value by credit hours to get grade points, then divides total grade points by total semester hours attempted.

UNT GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Grade Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Hours Attempted}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Value} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Grade PointsGrade value × credit hours for each course
Hours AttemptedGraded credit hours (excludes I, NP, P, PR, W, Z)

📝 Worked Example

A UNT example using three courses:

CourseCredit HoursGradeGrade ValueGrade Points
ENGL 13103.0A4.003 × 4.00 = 12.00
MATH 17103.0B3.003 × 3.00 = 9.00
HIST 26103.0C2.003 × 2.00 = 6.00
Total9.027.00

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{27.00}{9.0} = \mathbf{3.00} \]
