How UK GPA Is Calculated
UK multiplies each grade value by credit hours to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total quality hours.
📝 Worked Example
A five-course semester on UK's standard 4.0 scale:
| Course | Credit Hours | Grade | Grade Value | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ENG 104 | 3.0 | A | 4.00 | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
| MA 113 | 4.0 | B | 3.00 | 4 × 3.00 = 12.00 |
| BIO 148 | 3.0 | C | 2.00 | 3 × 2.00 = 6.00 |
| HIS 108 | 3.0 | D | 1.00 | 3 × 1.00 = 3.00 |
| CHE 105 | 3.0 | E | 0.00 | 3 × 0.00 = 0.00 |
| Total | 16.0 | — | — | 33.00 |

Used in units such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Law. Verify with your college before applying.
| Letter Grade | Quality Points |

| A− | 3.70 |
| B+ | 3.30 |
| B− | 2.70 |

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA
The following marks carry no quality points and are not counted in quality hours: P (Pass), S (Satisfactory), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), AU (Audit), and CR/NC (Credit / No Credit).
An E (failure) does count: it adds quality hours but contributes zero quality points, lowering your GPA.
UK GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does the University of Kentucky use?
UK uses a 4.0 quality-point scale. For most colleges the grades are whole letters: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, and E = 0. Your GPA equals total Quality Points (QP) divided by total Quality Hours (QH).
Does UK use F or E for failing?
UK uses E (value 0.00) for a failing grade instead of F. An E adds quality hours but contributes no quality points, so it pulls your GPA down.
Does UK use plus and minus grades?
Most UK colleges use whole-letter grades only. Plus/minus grading applies in specific units such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Law, where A− = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B− = 2.70, C+ = 2.30 and C− = 1.70. Check your college's policy before using them.
How do I convert my UK GPA to a percentage?
Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.
Which grades are left out of my UK GPA?
Marks of P, S, I, W, AU, and CR/NC carry no quality points and are excluded from both quality points and quality hours, so they don't affect your GPA.
