GPA Calculator

Calculate your UH GPA and convert it to percentage using the official plus/minus 4.0 quality-point scale used on your Cougar transcript.

Tool 1

UH GPA Calculator

Add each course with its letter grade and credit (semester) hours. Calculation uses UH's official quality-point values.

Add Your Courses

UH uses a plus/minus 4.0 scale. The official GPA is truncated to two decimals (not rounded).

The Math

How UH GPA Is Calculated

UH multiplies each grade point by credit hours to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total graded hours. The result is truncated to two decimals.

UH GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Graded Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Quality PointsGrade point value × credit hours for each course
Graded HoursTotal letter-graded credit hours (excludes S, U, I, W, IP)

📝 Worked Example

An example using three courses:

CourseCredit HoursGradeGrade PointQuality Points
ITEC 13013.0B+3.333 × 3.33 = 9.99
HDCS 13003.0A−3.673 × 3.67 = 11.01
MATH 13103.0C+2.333 × 2.33 = 6.99
Total9.027.99

Plugging into the formula and truncating to two decimals:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{27.99}{9.0} = 3.11 \]
Tool 2

UH GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your 4.0-scale UH GPA to an equivalent percentage instantly.

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any UH GPA between 0.0 and 4.0.

The Conversion Formula

UH uses a 4.0 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \text{GPA} \times 25 \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.5, then Percentage = 3.5 × 25 = 87.50%.

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA

The following marks carry no quality points and are not counted in graded hours: S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), IP (In Progress).

Transfer coursework may count toward degree requirements but does not factor into the UH GPA — only coursework completed at UH is included.

Got Questions?

UH GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does the University of Houston use?

UH uses a plus/minus 4.0 quality-point scale: A = 4.00, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, D− = 0.67, and F = 0.00. A+ is valued the same as A (4.00).

Does UH round or truncate the GPA?

UH truncates the GPA to two decimal places rather than rounding. Digits beyond the second decimal are dropped — so a computed 3.279 is reported as 3.27, not 3.28.

Is A+ worth more than A at UH?

No. At UH an A+ and an A both carry 4.00 quality points. There is no 4.33 value, so the maximum possible GPA is 4.00.

How do I convert my UH GPA to a percentage?

Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.

Do S/U grades or transfer credit affect my UH GPA?

No. S and U grades carry no quality points and are excluded, as are I, W, and IP. Transfer coursework counts toward degree requirements but is not included in the UH GPA.
