The Math

How UConn GPA Is Calculated

UConn multiplies each grade point by the course credits to get grade points, then divides total grade points by total graded credits.

UConn GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Grade Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Graded Credits}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credits})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credits}} \]
Grade PointsGrade point value × credits for each course
Graded CreditsTotal A–F graded credits (excludes P, S/U, W, audit)

📝 Worked Example

A UConn example using three courses:

CourseCreditsGradeGrade PointGrade Points
ENGL 10074.0A4.004 × 4.00 = 16.00
MATH 11314.0B−2.704 × 2.70 = 10.80
ECON 12013.0C+2.303 × 2.30 = 6.90
Total11.033.70

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{33.70}{11.0} \approx \mathbf{3.063} \]

The following marks carry no grade points and are not counted in graded credits: P (Pass), S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory), W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), and audit grades.

When a course is repeated, only the most recent grade and credits are included in the GPA; the earlier attempt remains on the transcript but is removed from the GPA calculation.
