The Math

How UC GPA Is Calculated

UC multiplies each quality-point value by credit hours, then divides total quality points by total graded credit hours.

UC GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Graded Credit Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Quality Point Value} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Quality PointsQuality-point value × credit hours for each course
Graded HoursTotal credit hours that carry quality points (excludes P, U, T, W, etc.)

📝 Worked Example

A sample using three UC courses:

CourseCredit HoursGradeQuality PointQuality Points
ENGL 10013.0A4.00003 × 4.0000 = 12.0000
MATH 10614.0B−2.66674 × 2.6667 = 10.6668
HIST 10013.0C+2.33333 × 2.3333 = 6.9999
Total10.029.6667

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{29.6667}{10.0} \approx \mathbf{2.97} \]
