How Tufts GPA Is Calculated
Tufts multiplies each grade point by course credits to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total graded credits.
📝 Worked Example
A sample calculation using three Tufts courses:
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Point | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ENG 1 | 4.0 | A | 4.00 | 4 × 4.00 = 16.00 |
| MATH 32 | 4.0 | B− | 2.67 | 4 × 2.67 = 10.68 |
| CHEM 1 | 3.0 | C+ | 2.33 | 3 × 2.33 = 6.99 |
| Total | 11.0 | — | — | 33.67 |

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA
The following marks carry no grade points and do not affect your GPA: P (Pass, D− or better), CR / NC (Credit / No Credit), S / U (Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory), I (Incomplete), COM (Complete), Y (Year-long course).
Under the Pass/Fail option, a grade of P is awarded for work at the D− level or better and does not change your GPA. Audited courses also appear on the transcript but are excluded from GPA.
Tufts GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Tufts University use?
Tufts uses a plus/minus 4.0 grade-point scale: A = 4.00, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, D− = 0.67, and F = 0.00. Your GPA is total quality points divided by total graded credits.
Is A+ worth more than 4.0 at Tufts?
No — an A+ appears on your transcript but carries the same value as an A (4.00). It's a symbolic distinction and cannot push your GPA above 4.00.
Does an F count in my Tufts GPA?
Yes — a grade of F is worth 0.00 and is included in your grade point average. No credit is earned for a failed course.
How do I convert my Tufts GPA to a percentage?
Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.
Do Pass/Fail and audited courses affect my Tufts GPA?
No. Courses graded P (Pass), CR/NC, or Audit do not contribute to GPA. Only letter-graded courses carrying grade points are counted.
