The Math

How Stony Brook GPA Is Calculated

Stony Brook multiplies each grade's point value by course credits to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total graded credits.

Stony Brook GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credits}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Point Value} \times \text{Course Credits})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Course Credits}} \]
Quality PointsPoint value of the grade × credits for each course
CreditsTotal letter-graded credits (excludes P, NC, S, U, W, etc.)

📝 Worked Example

The official example from the Stony Brook Undergraduate Bulletin using five courses:

GradePoint ValueCourse CreditsQuality Points
A4.0034.00 × 3 = 12.00
B3.0043.00 × 4 = 12.00
C+2.3332.33 × 3 = 6.99
D1.0031.00 × 3 = 3.00
F0.0030.00 × 3 = 0.00
Total1633.99

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{33.99}{16} \approx \mathbf{2.12} \]
