How Stanford GPA Is Calculated
Stanford multiplies each grade point by the course unit value, then divides total grade points by total graded units.
📝 Worked Example
An official Stanford example using three courses:
| Course | Units | Grade | Grade Point | Grade Points × Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course X | 3.0 | B− | 2.7 | 2.7 × 3 = 8.1 |
| Course Y | 4.0 | A− | 3.7 | 3.7 × 4 = 14.8 |
| Course Z | 3.0 | B+ | 3.3 | 3.3 × 3 = 9.9 |
| Total | 10.0 | — | — | 32.8 |

Stanford GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Stanford University use?
Stanford uses a 4.3 grade-point scale: A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, and NP = 0.0.
Is A+ worth 4.3 at Stanford?
Yes — an A+ carries a value of 4.3. Because Stanford uses a 4.3 scale on the unofficial transcript, it is possible to earn a cumulative GPA above 4.0.
Does NP affect my Stanford GPA?
Yes. An NP (Not Passed) grade carries 0.0 grade points but is still counted in your GPA, so it lowers your average. This is different from CR/NC and S grades, which are excluded entirely.
How do I convert my Stanford GPA to a percentage?
Use Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.3) × 100. For example, a GPA of 3.7 converts to about 86.05%.
Which grades are left out of my Stanford GPA?
Symbols of CR, NC, S, W, N, N−, I, RP, GNR and * carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA. The GSB and Law School use separate grading systems.
