GPA Calculator

Calculate your Stanford GPA and convert it to percentage using the official 4.3 grading scale used on your Stanford transcript.

Tool 1

Stanford GPA Calculator

Add each course with its letter grade and unit value. Calculation uses Stanford's official grade-point values.

Add Your Courses

Stanford uses a 4.3 scale, so A+ counts as 4.3 and a GPA above 4.0 is possible.

The Math

How Stanford GPA Is Calculated

Stanford multiplies each grade point by the course unit value, then divides total grade points by total graded units.

Stanford GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Units})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Units}} \]
Grade PointsGrade point value × units for each graded course
UnitsTotal graded units (excludes CR, NC, S, W, I, etc.)

📝 Worked Example

An official Stanford example using three courses:

CourseUnitsGradeGrade PointGrade Points × Units
Course X3.0B−2.72.7 × 3 = 8.1
Course Y4.0A−3.73.7 × 4 = 14.8
Course Z3.0B+3.33.3 × 3 = 9.9
Total10.032.8

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{32.8}{10.0} = \mathbf{3.28} \]

Stanford GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your 4.3-scale Stanford GPA to an equivalent percentage instantly.

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any Stanford GPA between 0.0 and 4.3.

The Conversion Formula

Stanford uses a 4.3 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.3}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.7, then Percentage = (3.7 ÷ 4.3) × 100 ≈ 86.05%.

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA

The following grades and symbols carry no grade points and are not used in the GPA: CR (Credit), NC (No Credit), S (Satisfactory), W (Withdrawal), N, N−, I (Incomplete), RP, GNR, and *.

The temporary grade L is assigned a passing GPA of 2.0 until a final grade is submitted. Note that NP (0.0) is counted in your GPA.

Got Questions?

Stanford GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does Stanford University use?

Stanford uses a 4.3 grade-point scale: A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, and NP = 0.0.

Is A+ worth 4.3 at Stanford?

Yes — an A+ carries a value of 4.3. Because Stanford uses a 4.3 scale on the unofficial transcript, it is possible to earn a cumulative GPA above 4.0.

Does NP affect my Stanford GPA?

Yes. An NP (Not Passed) grade carries 0.0 grade points but is still counted in your GPA, so it lowers your average. This is different from CR/NC and S grades, which are excluded entirely.

How do I convert my Stanford GPA to a percentage?

Use Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.3) × 100. For example, a GPA of 3.7 converts to about 86.05%.

Which grades are left out of my Stanford GPA?

Symbols of CR, NC, S, W, N, N−, I, RP, GNR and * carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA. The GSB and Law School use separate grading systems.
