How Rice GPA Is Calculated
Rice multiplies each grade point by credit hours to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total credit hours attempted.
📝 Worked Example
An official Rice example using four courses:
| Course | Credit Hours | Grade | Grade Point | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 3 | B | 3.00 | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Course 2 | 4 | A− | 3.67 | 4 × 3.67 = 14.68 |
| Course 3 | 2 | C | 2.00 | 2 × 2.00 = 4.00 |
| Course 4 | 3 | C | 2.00 | 3 × 2.00 = 6.00 |
| Total | 12 | — | — | 33.68 |

A grade of F earned in a Pass/Fail course is treated like a normal F and counts toward your GPA. An A+ earned before Fall 2018 uses 4.33 grade points rather than 4.00.
Rice GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Rice University use?
Rice uses a plus/minus 4.00 grade-point scale: A+ = 4.00, A = 4.00, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, D− = 0.67, and F = 0.00.
Is A+ worth more than A at Rice?
No. Beginning Fall 2018, an A+ is worth 4.00 grade points — the same as an A. A+ grades earned before Fall 2018 still use 4.33 grade points in GPA calculations.
How does Rice calculate GPA?
Rice GPA is credit-hour weighted. Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours to give quality points. The total quality points are then divided by the total credit hours attempted.
Do Pass (P) and Fail (F) grades affect my Rice GPA?
A P (Pass) does not affect GPA. An F (Fail) counts as 0.00, and its attempted credits are still included in total credits, even though no credit is earned. An F from a Pass/Fail course is treated like a normal F.
How do I convert my Rice GPA to a percentage?
Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.
