The Math

How Ohio State GPA Is Calculated

Ohio State multiplies each grade point by credit hours to get credit (quality) points, then divides total credit points by total credit hours attempted for a letter grade.

OSU GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Credit PointsGrade point value × credit hours for each course
Credit HoursTotal hours attempted for a letter grade (excludes S/U, P, W, etc.)

📝 Worked Example

An official Ohio State example using five courses:

Psych 11003B+3.33 × 3.3 = 9.9
Math 11483B3.03 × 3.0 = 9.0
Biology 11134C2.04 × 2.0 = 8.0
History of Art 20013B3.03 × 3.0 = 9.0

Marks of S, U, P, NP, W, EM, and an unresolved I carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA hours, so they don't affect your GPA. Note that failing E/EN/NEN marks are counted.
