The Math

How GMU GPA Is Calculated

Mason multiplies each grade's quality-point value by credit hours, then divides total quality points by GPA hours.

GMU GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{GPA Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Quality Point Value} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Quality PointsQuality-point value × credit hours for each course
GPA HoursTotal credits graded A+ through F (excludes S, NC, IN, IP, AB, NA)

📝 Worked Example

A sample Mason semester using three courses:

CourseCredit HoursGradeQuality PointQuality Points
ENGH 1013.0A4.003 × 4.00 = 12.00
MATH 1134.0B−2.674 × 2.67 = 10.68
ECON 1033.0C+2.333 × 2.33 = 6.99
Total10.029.67

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{29.67}{10.0} \approx \mathbf{2.97} \]
Tool 2

GMU GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your 4.0-scale Mason GPA to an equivalent percentage instantly.

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any GMU GPA between 0.0 and 4.0.

The Conversion Formula

GMU uses a 4.0 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \text{GPA} \times 25 \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.5, then Percentage = 3.5 × 25 = 87.50%.
