The Math

How Emory GPA Is Calculated

Emory multiplies each grade point by credit hours to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total GPA credit hours.

Emory GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{GPA Credit Hours}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Hours})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Hours}} \]
Quality PointsGrade point value × credit hours for each course
GPA Credit HoursTotal graded credit hours (excludes S, U, W, etc.)

📝 Worked Example

An example using three courses on Emory's scale:

CourseCredit HoursGradeGrade PointQuality Points
ENG 1013.0A4.03 × 4.0 = 12.00
MATH 1114.0B−2.74 × 2.7 = 10.80
HIST 1013.0C+2.33 × 2.3 = 6.90
Total10.029.70

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{29.70}{10.0} \approx \mathbf{2.97} \]
