How Duke GPA Is Calculated
Duke multiplies each grade point by the course's credits to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total graded credits.
📝 Worked Example
A sample using three Duke courses:
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Point | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WRITING 101 | 1.0 | A | 4.0 | 1 × 4.0 = 4.00 |
| MATH 111 | 1.0 | B+ | 3.3 | 1 × 3.3 = 3.30 |
| CHEM 101 | 1.0 | C− | 1.7 | 1 × 1.7 = 1.70 |
| Total | 3.0 | — | — | 9.00 |

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA
Courses taken on a Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, or Credit/No Credit basis carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA — including the failing grade in those courses.
Transfer course grades are not included in any Duke GPA, although interinstitutional courses (e.g. Robertson Scholars program) are included. Duke does not calculate GPA by major, minor, or certificate.
Duke GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Duke University use?
Duke uses a 4.0 plus/minus grade-point scale for undergraduates (Trinity and Pratt): A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 1.0, and F = 0.0. The maximum GPA is 4.000.
Does Duke give extra points for an A+?
No. Duke treats A+ and A the same — both worth 4.0. There is no GPA boost above 4.0 for an A+, and the maximum cumulative GPA is 4.000.
How do I convert my Duke GPA to a percentage?
Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.
Does Duke round or truncate the GPA?
Duke truncates all GPAs to three decimal places rather than rounding. For example, a raw value of 3.7896 is shown as 3.789, not 3.790.
Which grades are excluded from a Duke GPA?
Courses taken Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, or Credit/No Credit carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA, including the failing grade. Transfer course grades are also not counted in any Duke GPA.
