GPA Calculator

Calculate your Duke GPA and convert it to percentage using the official 4.0 plus/minus grading scale used by Trinity College and the Pratt School of Engineering.

Tool 1

Duke GPA Calculator

Add each course with its letter grade and credit value. Calculation uses Duke's official grade-point values for Trinity & Pratt undergraduates.

Add Your Courses

Duke uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale. A+ and A are both 4.0 — there is no boost above 4.00.

The Math

How Duke GPA Is Calculated

Duke multiplies each grade point by the course's credits to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total graded credits.

Duke GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Quality Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Graded Credits}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credits})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credits}} \]
Quality PointsGrade point value × credits for each course
Graded CreditsTotal letter-graded credits (excludes P/F, S/U, CR/NC)

📝 Worked Example

A sample using three Duke courses:

CourseCreditsGradeGrade PointQuality Points
WRITING 1011.0A4.01 × 4.0 = 4.00
MATH 1111.0B+3.31 × 3.3 = 3.30
CHEM 1011.0C−1.71 × 1.7 = 1.70
Total3.09.00

Plugging into the formula (Duke truncates to three decimals):

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{9.00}{3.0} = \mathbf{3.000} \]
Tool 2

Duke GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your 4.0-scale Duke GPA to an equivalent percentage instantly.

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any Duke GPA between 0.0 and 4.0.

The Conversion Formula

Duke uses a 4.0 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \text{GPA} \times 25 \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.5, then Percentage = 3.5 × 25 = 87.50%.

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA

Courses taken on a Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, or Credit/No Credit basis carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA — including the failing grade in those courses.

Transfer course grades are not included in any Duke GPA, although interinstitutional courses (e.g. Robertson Scholars program) are included. Duke does not calculate GPA by major, minor, or certificate.

Got Questions?

Duke GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does Duke University use?

Duke uses a 4.0 plus/minus grade-point scale for undergraduates (Trinity and Pratt): A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 1.0, and F = 0.0. The maximum GPA is 4.000.

Does Duke give extra points for an A+?

No. Duke treats A+ and A the same — both worth 4.0. There is no GPA boost above 4.0 for an A+, and the maximum cumulative GPA is 4.000.

How do I convert my Duke GPA to a percentage?

Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.

Does Duke round or truncate the GPA?

Duke truncates all GPAs to three decimal places rather than rounding. For example, a raw value of 3.7896 is shown as 3.789, not 3.790.

Which grades are excluded from a Duke GPA?

Courses taken Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, or Credit/No Credit carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA, including the failing grade. Transfer course grades are also not counted in any Duke GPA.
