How Columbia GPA Is Calculated
Columbia multiplies each grade point by the course's credit points, then divides total grade points by total credits attempted.
📝 Worked Example
A sample term with three courses:
| Course | Credit Points | Grade | Grade Point | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ENGL 1101 | 4.0 | A+ | 4.33 | 4 × 4.33 = 17.32 |
| MATH 1101 | 3.0 | B− | 2.67 | 3 × 2.67 = 8.01 |
| HIST 1101 | 3.0 | C+ | 2.33 | 3 × 2.33 = 6.99 |
| Total | 10.0 | — | — | 32.32 |

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA
Courses graded Pass/Fail (P) carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA. Transfer coursework may appear on the transcript but does not count toward the Columbia GPA.
For repeated courses, only the grade from the first attempt is calculated into the GPA — except when the first attempt was an F, in which case both grades are factored in.
Columbia GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Columbia University use?
Columbia uses a 4.33 plus/minus scale: A+ = 4.33, A = 4.00, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, D = 1.00, and F = 0.00. Plus and minus grades are not used with D or F.
Is A+ worth 4.33 at Columbia?
Yes — an A+ carries a value of 4.33. Unlike some universities, Columbia does not cap the cumulative GPA at 4.00, so a transcript can reflect a GPA above 4.0.
How does the Registrar calculate my Columbia GPA?
Each grade's point value is multiplied by the course's credit points to get quality points. These are summed and divided by total credits attempted. Courses are weighted by credit points, and courses that cannot be credited toward the degree are excluded.
How do I convert my Columbia GPA to a percentage?
On a 4.0 basis use Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.
Do Pass/Fail or repeated courses affect my GPA?
Pass/Fail courses carry no grade points and are excluded. For repeated courses, only the first attempt counts toward GPA — unless the first attempt was an F, in which case both attempts are included.
