GPA Calculator

Calculate your Columbia GPA and convert it to percentage using the official 4.33 plus/minus grading scale used on your Columbia transcript.

Tool 1

Columbia GPA Calculator

Add each course with its letter grade and credit points. Calculation uses Columbia's official grade-point values.

Add Your Courses

Columbia uses a 4.33 plus/minus scale. A+ counts as 4.33 and the cumulative GPA is not capped at 4.00.

The Math

How Columbia GPA Is Calculated

Columbia multiplies each grade point by the course's credit points, then divides total grade points by total credits attempted.

Columbia GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Grade Point} \times \text{Credit Points})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credit Points}} \]
Grade PointsNumeric value of the letter grade (A+ = 4.33 … F = 0.00)
Credit PointsTotal graded credits attempted (excludes Pass/Fail and transfer credit)

📝 Worked Example

A sample term with three courses:

CourseCredit PointsGradeGrade PointQuality Points
ENGL 11014.0A+4.334 × 4.33 = 17.32
MATH 11013.0B−2.673 × 2.67 = 8.01
HIST 11013.0C+2.333 × 2.33 = 6.99
Total10.032.32

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{32.32}{10.0} \approx \mathbf{3.23} \]

The Conversion Formula

On a 4.0 basis the standard conversion is:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.5, then Percentage = (3.5 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 87.50%.

📌 Grades Excluded from GPA

Courses graded Pass/Fail (P) carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA. Transfer coursework may appear on the transcript but does not count toward the Columbia GPA.

For repeated courses, only the grade from the first attempt is calculated into the GPA — except when the first attempt was an F, in which case both grades are factored in.

Got Questions?

Columbia GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does Columbia University use?

Columbia uses a 4.33 plus/minus scale: A+ = 4.33, A = 4.00, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, D = 1.00, and F = 0.00. Plus and minus grades are not used with D or F.

Is A+ worth 4.33 at Columbia?

Yes — an A+ carries a value of 4.33. Unlike some universities, Columbia does not cap the cumulative GPA at 4.00, so a transcript can reflect a GPA above 4.0.

How does the Registrar calculate my Columbia GPA?

Each grade's point value is multiplied by the course's credit points to get quality points. These are summed and divided by total credits attempted. Courses are weighted by credit points, and courses that cannot be credited toward the degree are excluded.

How do I convert my Columbia GPA to a percentage?

On a 4.0 basis use Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.

Do Pass/Fail or repeated courses affect my GPA?

Pass/Fail courses carry no grade points and are excluded. For repeated courses, only the first attempt counts toward GPA — unless the first attempt was an F, in which case both attempts are included.
