How Clemson GPA Is Calculated
Clemson multiplies each grade's quality-point value by its credit hours, then divides total quality points by total GPA hours.
📝 Worked Example
A Clemson example using three courses:
| Course | Credit Hours | Grade | Quality Point | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ENGL 1030 | 3.0 | A | 4.00 | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
| MATH 1060 | 4.0 | B | 3.00 | 4 × 3.00 = 12.00 |
| CH 1010 | 4.0 | C | 2.00 | 4 × 2.00 = 8.00 |
| Total | 11.0 | — | — | 32.00 |

📘 Clemson Quality-Point Values
Note: Clemson uses a whole-letter scale with no plus/minus grade-point values.
| Letter Grade | Quality Points | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | Excellent — the highest grade given |
| B | 3.00 | Good — definitely above average |
| C | 2.00 | Fair — average or medium |
| D | 1.00 | Pass — lowest passing grade |
| F | 0.00 | Failed — course must be repeated for credit |
📌 Grades Excluded from GPA
The following marks carry no quality points: F, I (Incomplete), P (Pass), NP (No Pass), and W (Withdrew). P, NP, and W are excluded from GPA hours entirely and do not affect your GPA.
An I (Incomplete) is calculated as an F in your GPA until the remaining work is completed and a final grade is assigned. Only grades earned at Clemson are used in computing your grade-point average; transfer grades are not included.
Clemson GPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Clemson University use?
Clemson uses a whole-letter 4.0 quality-point scale: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, and F = 0. There are no plus/minus grade-point values in the undergraduate GPA calculation.
Does Clemson use plus and minus grades?
No. For undergraduate GPA, Clemson assigns quality points only to the whole letter grades A, B, C, D, and F. There are no grade-point values such as A−, B+, or C−.
How is an Incomplete (I) grade treated?
An I (Incomplete) is calculated as an F in your grade-point average until the outstanding work is made up and a final grade is assigned. An I converts to an F if it is not removed within the time specified by policy.
How do I convert my Clemson GPA to a percentage?
Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.
Which grades are left out of my Clemson GPA?
Grades of P (Pass), NP (No Pass), and W (Withdrew) earn no quality points and are excluded from GPA hours, so they don't affect your GPA. Transfer grades are also excluded — only courses taken at Clemson count toward your GPA.
