GPA Calculator

Calculate your BU GPA and convert it to percentage using the official 4.0 honor-point scale used on your Boston University transcript.

Tool 1

BU GPA Calculator

Add each course with its letter grade and credits. Calculation uses BU's official honor-point values. Most BU courses are 4 credits.

Add Your Courses

BU uses a 4.0 honor-point scale. There is no A+, D+, or D− grade.

The Math

How BU GPA Is Calculated

BU multiplies each grade's honor points by the course credits to get honor points, then divides total honor points by total credits attempted.

BU GPA Formula
\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum \text{Honor Points}}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credits}} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum (\text{Honor Points} \times \text{Credits})}{\displaystyle\sum \text{Credits}} \]
Honor PointsGrade honor-point value × credits for each course
CreditsTotal credits attempted (excludes P, W, AU, MG, CR, NC, I, J)

📝 Worked Example

An official BU example using five courses:

CourseCreditsGradeHonor PointsTotal
CAS EC1014C+2.34 × 2.3 = 9.2
CAS MA1094B+3.34 × 3.3 = 13.2
ENG BE2002C−1.72 × 1.7 = 3.4
SHA HF1004A4.04 × 4.0 = 16.0
SMG SM1081A−3.71 × 3.7 = 3.7
Total1545.5

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{GPA} = \frac{45.5}{15} \approx \mathbf{3.03} \]

BU GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your 4.0-scale BU GPA to an equivalent percentage instantly.

Convert GPA → Percentage

Enter any BU GPA between 0.0 and 4.0.

The Conversion Formula

BU uses a 4.0 scale, so:

\[ \text{Percentage} = \text{GPA} \times 25 \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad \text{Percentage} = \left(\frac{\text{GPA}}{4.0}\right) \times 100 \]

Example: If your GPA is 3.5, then Percentage = 3.5 × 25 = 87.50%.

A F* (fail in a Pass/Fail course) carries 0.0 and affects the GPA exactly like a normal F. Grades for courses taken at other institutions are not included in your BU GPA.

Got Questions?

BU GPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does Boston University use?

BU uses a 4.0 honor-point scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. There is no A+, D+, or D−.

How are honor points calculated at BU?

Multiply the credits of a course by the honor-point value of its grade. For example, a C+ in a 4-credit course earns 4 × 2.3 = 9.2 honor points. Your GPA is total honor points ÷ total credits attempted.

Do repeated courses replace the old grade at BU?

No. At BU, the grades and credits of all repeated courses are calculated into the GPA. A retaken grade does not remove or replace the original grade.

How do I convert my BU GPA to a percentage?

Use Percentage = GPA × 25 (equivalent to (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100). For example, a GPA of 3.5 converts to 87.5%.

Which grades are left out of my BU GPA?

Marks of AU, P, W, MG, H, CR, NC, and X carry no honor points and are excluded from the GPA. Transfer credits from other institutions are also not counted.
